Liberals have claimed that abortion of viable fetuses is rarely done.

The Abortion Survivors Network - "Public" Survivors & Their Stories

Quote:
Although data suggests that there are approximately 44,000 abortion survivors living in the United States (see the Failed Abortions-Get Informed page for more information on this statistic), there are only a small number of abortion survivors who speak publicly about their experiences.

now if aborting viable fetuses is rare, and the purpose of the procedure is to kill the fetus and 44,0000 have survived then that means:

1. either Doctors screw up the procedure a hell of a lot.

2. IT ISN'T RARE.

How do these people speak about their experiences? I don't remember anything from my time in the womb.

In 1970, Sarah’s mother, Betty (pictured here with her) tried to abort Sarah in Los Angeles. At the time, Betty did not know she was pregnant with twins. One baby was aborted, but miraculously, Sarah survived. Sarah has forgiven her mother -- and for five years they traveled the world speaking together about the pain and suffering caused by abortion. Below is Sarah's story:

"…My mother decided to have an abortion. At the time, she was pregnant with twins, but nobody knew this, not even her doctor. My tiny brother and I were both there growing in her womb, until that dreadful day. Before the abortion, we were both alive. Moments later, I was alone.

It's frightening to think I was almost aborted when my mom had a D&C abortion. Somehow, miraculously, I survived! My twin brother wasn't so lucky. Andrew was aborted and we lost him forever.

The Abortion Survivors Network - Dr. Imre Teglasy

Quote:
“I was 11 years old … and somehow I heard a family speech about my past. My father told some relatives the story, and I just had a very sad feeling because at once I was able to see clearly why my relationship with my mother was so complicated,” Dr. Téglásy revealed. “At 11 years old children are very loved by their parents, the relationship normally is good, but [there was] something wrong with [the relationship with] my mother. So this was a kind of an earthquake in my heart, and I realized I was an abortion survivor.”

Dr. Téglásy, who is president of Alpha Alliance for Life, HLI’s affiliate in Hungary, tells the story in a bonus clip from HLI’s new documentary “Central and Eastern Europe: A Return to Life” premiering on Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) on January 20, 2013. The film, which focuses on the pro-life battles in Hungary and Poland, will also be broadcast on EWTN on the evening of the 40th March for Life in Washington, D.C. on January 25.

What a crock.

Let's look at statistics and facts.

CDC - CDCs Abortion Surveillance System FAQs - Reproductive Health

Quote:
When did CDC start conducting abortion surveillance?

CDC began abortion surveillance in 1969 to document the number and characteristics of women obtaining legal induced abortions. Many states and reporting areas (New York City and the District of Columbia) conduct abortion surveillance. CDC compiles the information these reporting areas collect to produce national estimates. CDC’s surveillance system compiles information on legal induced abortions only.
How does CDC define abortion?

For the purpose of surveillance, a legal induced abortion is defined as an intervention performed by a licensed clinician (e.g., a physician, nurse-midwife, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant) that is intended to terminate an ongoing pregnancy.

Many areas now report if an abortion was medical or surgical. Medical abortions are legal procedures that use medications instead of surgery. The number of states and areas collecting information on the use of medical abortion is increasing each year.
Are states required to report their abortion statistics to CDC?

No, states and areas voluntarily report data to CDC for inclusion in its annual Abortion Surveillance Report. CDC's Division of Reproductive Health prepares surveillance reports as data become available. There is no national requirement for data submission or reporting.

States needing guidance on abortion surveillance may contact CDC at Contact CDC-INFO.
How is the report prepared and formatted?

Preparation of the Abortion Surveillance Reports is based on the data available from all states and reporting areas that voluntarily provide this information for a given calendar year. In addition, after CDC receives the data some additional time is required to perform the analyses that produce the tables, charts, and the narrative describing methods and trends. Please view the abstract and methods portion of the most recent Abortion Surveillance Report for more information on compilation of the report.
How is the Abortion Surveillance Report used?

This report is used for many purposes in the field of public health. In the past, it has been used to—

Identify characteristics of women who are at high risk of unintended pregnancy.
Evaluate the effectiveness of programs for reducing teen pregnancies and unintended pregnancies among women of all ages.
Calculate pregnancy rates, on the basis of the number of pregnancies ending in abortion, in conjunction with birth data and pregnancy loss estimates.
Monitor changes in clinical practice patterns related to abortion, such as changes in the types of procedures used, and weeks of gestation at the time of abortion. This information is needed to calculate the mortality rate of specific abortion procedures.

Surveillance systems, such as this one, continue to provide data necessary to examine trends in public health.

. . .

Abortion Surveillance—Findings and Reports

Abortion Surveillance 2011

In 2011, 730,322 legal induced abortions were reported to CDC from 49 reporting areas. The abortion rate for 2011 was 13.9 abortions per 1,000 women ages 15–44, and the abortion ratio was 219 abortions per 1,000 live births.

Compared with 2010, the total number and rate of reported abortions for 2011 decreased 5%, and the abortion ratio decreased 4%. Additionally, from 2002 to 2011, the number, rate, and ratio of reported abortions decreased 13%, 14%, and 12%, respectively. Given the large decreases in the total number, rate, and ratio of reported abortions from 2010 to 2011, in combination with decreases that occurred during 2008-2010, all three measures reached historic lows.

Women in their twenties accounted for the majority of abortions in 2011 and throughout the period of analysis. The majority of abortions in 2011 took place early in gestation: 91.4% of abortions were performed at ≤13 weeks’ gestation; a smaller number of abortions (7.3%) were performed at 14–20 weeks’ gestation, and even fewer (1.4%) were performed at ≥21 weeks’ gestation. In 2011, 19.1% of all abortions were medical abortions. Source: MMWR 2014;63(11)
Seems to me once again facts outweigh some religious organization making things up as they go.

From the movie, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance:

Ransom Stoddard (James Stewart): "You're not going to use the story, Mr. Scott?"

Maxwell Scott (Carleton Young): "No, sir. This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend."

Are you an abortion survivor? - Salon.com

Quote:
The “abortion survivor” has become a powerful symbol in right-wing politics. Wade into it, and you realize it’s defined so loosely that practically anyone can claim the title: Having a relative who had an abortion is enough to make you a “survivor,” according to some definitions. One self-described survivor was recently doing commercials for Personhood Oklahoma, and now Jessen’s story has inspired an antiabortion movie, “October Baby.” It opened in the top 10 at the box office last weekend on the strength of its Christian audience. Reviewing the film, Salon’s critic, Andrew O’Hehir, wrote, “The bizarre circumstances found in ‘October Baby’ presumably could happen in the real world, the odds are something like being struck by lightning and eaten by a shark at the same time. With a winning lottery ticket tucked in your swimsuit.” According to the Daily Beast, that criticism “irked” the director most of all, because the inspired-by-a-true-story element is so crucial to the film’s message.

But though fetuses have been known, in very rare circumstances, to survive intended terminations, those are roughly the odds, so far as they can be determined from the medical literature. One 1985 study found that of “33,090 suction curettage abortions performed at less than or equal to 12 weeks’ gestation, the rate of unrecognized failed abortions was 2.3 per 1000 abortions.” Both that study and one published in Norway in 1992 said earlier abortions were actually more likely to fail than later ones; the Norwegian study found an overall failure rate of .05 percent. Meanwhile, a 1995 Israeli study reviewed the literature and noted that “some of the reasons for these failed abortions include inexperience on the part of physicians.” Undiagnosed ectopic pregnancies, which are never viable, were also cited as a factor.

But for the antiabortion movement, the definition of an “abortion survivor” is so broad that these statistics are irrelevant. A right-wing website for teens, Teenbreaks, defines it three ways: “people who survived an actual abortion attempt”; “twin abortion survivors,” from selective reductions; and “sibling abortion survivors. These are people born into families where a brother or sister was aborted.” The testimonials that follow include Jessen’s, but also this one from “Breanna”:
Nothing more than frauds; like the birth certificate scandal of the President. Hysterical liars trying to control women's lives using lies to do it.

Who Is Raymond Ruddy, Lila Rose's Funder? | Research | Media Matters for America

Quote:
Ruddy Funded Hoax Videos Attacking Planned Parenthood

Gerard Health Foundation Funded Live Action's Anti-Planned Parenthood Hoax. A December 3, 2010, press release from Live Action titled "Live Action to Launch Major Investigations in 2011 with New Fundraising" said:

Live Action, the youth-led pro-life group responsible for exposing statutory rape cover-up, racism, and medical misinformation at Planned Parenthood, is preparing to launch several major investigations of the abortion industry next year. A donor fund has awarded Live Action a $125,000 matching gift, and Live Action is now starting a fundraising campaign to match the gift and fund the new investigations. [Live Action, 12/3/10]

Live Action did not report the identity of the donor. On January 22, Life Prizes, an initiative of the Gerard Health Foundation, held an invitation-only awards ceremony. Peter Smith of LifeSiteNews.com reported on that ceremony in a January 25 article:

[Gerard Health Vice President Claude] Allen announced that Life Prizes 2008 award winner Lila Rose had been offered an additional $125,000 matching grant for her investigative work exposing the practices of other abortionists.

"Lila has met that match," he announced, which the audience met with loud applause.

Laura Ingraham, a nationally syndicated talk show radio host and FOX News contributor, was master of ceremonies for the event, her second time in that role. [LifeSiteNews.com, 1/28/11]

Ruddy Founded The Gerard Health Foundation. From The Boston Globe:

BornAliveTruth joins a list of undertakings that have made Ruddy a major funder of causes dear to the Christian right. The Gerard Health Foundation, which he created in 2001, has disbursed more than $7 million to groups that oppose abortion rights, support abstinence-only sex education, and stress abstinence and marital fidelity, rather than the distribution of condoms, to fight the spread of AIDS. ["Faith groups urge cuts to AIDS fund Allege opposition to Christian efforts," The Boston Globe, 12/1/06, retrieved from Nexis]

Ruddy Funds Gerard Health Foundation. In 2007, 2008, and 2009 Gerard Health Foundation reported only "Raymond & Marilyn Ruddy Charitable" as contributors on its 990 Forms [retrieved from GuideStar.Org].

Fox News Promoted Live Action's Hoax. Fox News has repeatedly promoted Live Action's videos, often failing to note key facts:

O'Reilly failed to report that Planned Parenthood contacted authorities after the Live Action. "sting" [Fox News, The O'Reilly Factor, 2/8/11]

Fox attacked Planned Parenthood for video showing no wrongdoing. [Fox News, America's News HQ, 2/6/11]

Ingraham: "The Lila Rose folks ... should get the Pulitzer" for their videos smearing Planned Parenthood. [Fox News, The O'Reilly Factor, 2/4/11]

Special Report failed to note that Planned Parenthood reported suspected sex trafficking to the FBI. [Fox News, Special Report with Brett Baier, 2/2/11]

They speak to the fact they were ABORTED AND SURVIVED.

So it is PROOF that aborting viable fetuses is not a rare occurrence, as the pro-abortion crowd claims.

Apparently you did not read their accounts.
