As a civilized society, we have always defined human life by activity in both the brain and the heart. A simple heart-beat combined with any activity in the brain has meant that a person exhibits signs of life – no matter where you are in these United States. Our United States Constitution grants citizens the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. But nowhere in that constitution does it define birth as a prerequisite for personhood.

Science has proven that a fetus at or about 8-weeks has both a heart-beat and brain activity, both the elements used to measure human life. Because an 8-weeks fetus is alive and the U.S. Constitution doesn't provide any age requirements for citizenship, it should afforded full protection under the law. And prior to 8-weeks, a fetus is a developing human being. It won't because a chicken, a grasshopper or a tree.

The standard for life used to be breath, that which does not breathe, does not live.

While there is a question about when the fetus becomes a human being with rights, there is no question that the woman is a human being with rights, which is why we let her choose.

What if there are two adults who are conjoined twins. Can one twin decide that its her body and decide to no longer be a host for her sister sharing her vital body part and decide to end he sister's life?

So is someone on a ventilator not considered living?

The rightwing evangelicals opposition to abortion clearly isn't based on religion: as I proved in the other thread the Bible is actually PRO on abortion. Also some other problems with the opposition of the evangelicals that make no sense: If "sinless" people go to Heaven, and the goal of Christianity is to get people into Heaven, then why are they opposed? The tykes are spared of life of grinding misery and sent straight to Heaven. Seems like the winning lottery ticket of the hereafter, to me.

Secondly when Christians are asked why God allows sin to exist, they always says "free will". Okie doke....then that means they are subverting God's will by taking free will and choice away from women on the issue of abortion.

Really, they don't have a leg to stand on from a religious basis. It's fine to oppose abortion, but don't go claiming a religious basis for it when there is no basis for opposition (at least in Christianity).
