Here's yer problem

Congress has 11% approval ratings but 96% incumbent reelection rate, meme says

FFS, 11% approval but you keep sending the same guys back. Am I the only one that thinks that's sad?

Quote:
It would be an understatement to say that voters in the recently completed midterm elections didnít exactly feel warm and fuzzy about incumbents on the ballot this year -- even about the ones they voted for. According to the 2014 exit poll of voters, 59 percent of those who voted said they werenít happy with Republican leadership in Congress, even as they were handing control of the Senate to the GOP.

A meme making its way around social media, sent to PolitiFact by a reader, captured the frustration many Americans felt. The meme said, "11% approval ratings. 96.4% re-elected" -- in other words, Congress has 11 percent approval ratings, yet 96.4 percent of incumbent lawmakers were re-elected in 2014. The text was superimposed over a photograph of the House chamber in the Capitol.
This is an old story but still resonates.

This one is pretty easy to figure out. The members of the House are elected by districts to represent those districts and state. The members of the Senate are elected statewide in their respected states to represent their states. Polls are national and asking people in Alabama to rate the House and Senate members from California and vise versa. The results are not a mystery. The incumbency is irrelevant to the national poll because the people of the respective districts and states are obviously happy with how they are represented.

Now there's some really successful gerrymandering that allows 11% of the population to control 96% of the seats.

Eleven percent of the population did not take the poll.

What part of Congessman Bob from District X being re-elected four times because the people of Bob's district love him and will re-elect him again, but Bob gets poor performance rating in a poll by a couple of thousand people who have never heard of Bob because he is lumped into the entire group do you not understand why Bob will be re-elected?

The constitution is broken, it's just that the results aren't bad enough yet to get people to fix it.
But the next couple of years are going to be pretty bad... so there's hope.

All Rs aren't stupid, or dull witted, but a bunch are. They stand out in a crowd.

The irony is they expect the government will bail them out. They're counting on it. Right wing welfare.

Trump and his coterie are exactly the folks who've fucked up this planet, our country, and our culture. They aren't products of our culture, far from it.

These kind of folks have been with us since before recorded history. Many legitimate criticisms can be laid at the feet of GW and Obama, but Trump is in a different category, akin to a snake oil salesman: All glitz, all sizzle, all lies, all the time.
