Thumbs down Facebook Ad Categories

If anyone has any idea about advertising on FB, consider this. I used to buy ads for shows but no more. My piddly little ad buys aren't going to hurt Zuckerberg, but I cannot be a part of this.

Last week, acting on a tip, we logged into Facebook's automated ad system to see if "Jew hater" was really an ad category. We found it, but discovered the category - with only 2,274 people in it - was too small for Facebook to allow us to buy an ad pegged only to Jew haters.

Facebook's automated system suggested "Second Amendment" as an additional category that boost our audience size to 119,000, presumably because its system had correlated gun enthusiasts with anti-Semites.
Thanks from RNG

The algorithms that have been developed, and I don't think it is going too far to call them examples of AI are truly impressive and very scary.

The number of times that I seem to type a word and a half into the Google search bar and it guesses what I want, correctly. The way the ads target us.

I look at something on Amazon and from then on even the BBC ads on the home page when I open it list that item from some other source. And this one makes me wonder if they don't all share the info they have on us.

There are some good things about this but more bad things.

And the authorities are starting to realize this. It sounds like Facebook, Google and such are about to be put under the microscope. Unfortunately this isn't because of what you discovered, Tris, but because of the Russian political shit that showed up there.

This is why I use ad block. So you and zuckerjew don't get money.

Wait, I don't even have a Facebook, because it's 2017 and I'm not, in fact, retarded.
Thanks from Sabcat and Hashtag

Facebook abandoned an experiment after two artificially intelligent programs appeared to be chatting to each other in a strange language only they understood.

The two chatbots came to create their own changes to English that made it easier for them to work - but which remained mysterious to the humans that supposedly look after them.

The bizarre discussions came as Facebook challenged its chatbots to try and negotiate with each other over a trade, attempting to swap hats, balls and books, each of which were given a certain value. But they quickly broke down as the robots appeared to chant at each other in a language that they each understood but which appears mostly incomprehensible to humans.

Facebook's experiment isn't the only time that artificial intelligence has invented new forms of language.

Earlier this year, Google revealed that the AI it uses for its Translate tool had created its own language, which it would translate things into and then out of. But the company was happy with that development and allowed it to continue.

Another study at OpenAI found that artificial intelligence could be encouraged to create a language, making itself more efficient and better at communicating as it did so.

And on that last point:
Robots have learned how to communicate with each other by creating their own language, a new report explains.

Experts at artificial intelligence research group OpenAI conducted an experiment that challenged software bots to complete a series of tasks, such as moving to a specific location, in a simple, two-dimensional virtual world.

The team used a technique called reinforcement learning, presenting the challenges as cooperative rather than competitive, and rewarding the robots for completing them.

Reward them? How? That's Bizzaro, way, way Bizzaro for me to think about.

How long before AI computers start posting on Facebook or Twitter? I'm confident some cadre of citizens will suggest that AI computers have a right to free speech. I'm unsure whether the Ds or Rs will take that position, but it seems no stretch to see some group of people doing it.
