The Problem Isn't Just Trump, It's Our Ignorant Electorate

Virulent as he may be, Donald J. Trump is a symptom not the disease. Without us, he would amount to nothing more than what he had always been before the bizzaro presidential election of 2016: a foppish narcissist desperate for any measure of affirmation; a joke; a nothing. He did not create his voters. They have been there all along, seething with sometimes justifiable anger and suffering their various insecurities. They created and enabled Trump. And make no mistake, in all their vulnerable humanity, they are us: Gullible, compliant, distracted, marinating in irony.

Surveys conducted every two years by the National Science Foundation consistently demonstrate that slightly more than half of Americans reject the settled science concerning human evolution. They are not unaware that virtually all credible scientists accept the overwhelming evidence that we evolved from earlier species. They simply choose not to accept that consensus because it doesn’t comport with their deeply held beliefs. Many also embrace the absurd notion that the earth is only six thousand years old. Astonishingly, in the early 21st century, around a quarter of our citizenry seems unaware that said earth revolves around the sun.

Why do you accept the pronouncements of The Institute for Creation Research and Answers in Genesis when every other serious science organization disagrees? I have no doubt that even just a little effort on your part would reveal point by point refutations of what ICR and AIG claim. Why not put in the effort?

I have been saying this for a long time. The electorate is so damn ignorant that I believe our own electorate represents the biggest threat to this country. Ignorant right wingers right here on DTT criticize RNG because he is Canadian. Well, RNG is so much more informed about current political events in this country compared to the average American as to be totally embarrassing. Don the Con is merely a symptom of how ignorant Americans have become IMO.
Thanks from Hollywood

I blame at least part of the dumbing down of America to the point where a dumbfuck such as Trump could become President to technology, the internet & social media.

The internet gives the average American immediate access to basically all the accumulated knowledge of mankind. Links to every major library, every museum, university, news source, etrc. etc. all over the world, 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
That is mind boggling, amazing!!!!

What do we actually use it for? Watching cute kitten videos, porn and arguing with strangers over stupid shit.

*sigh* Of course, I can't really blame it on the technology itself. We CHOOSE to use it the way we do.

We DESERVE a dumbfuck like Trump.

@skews13

Actually, it is much worse than that, as polls have been run showing that half of the US adult population gets this T or F question wrong:

"The Earth orbits the Sun and takes a year to do so--T or F"

Once one understands what an IQ of 100 means (i.e. what one can do with an IQ of 100), absurd looking results such as this begin to make a lot more sense. Note: I am not attempting to fully endorse the notion of IQ, more the general ranges discovered are what of most interest to me (in this context)

Seriously? There are THAT many people so dumb as to not know the answer is True? In THIS country?

@Hollywood

Unfortunately, yes.

They must not deem space an interesting/important subject, then the last time they were (likely) exposed to it was when they were young in the school system--which, by the time one is in their 40s+ or so, they may forget what a 'year' means. That is, there are essentially two questions:

(A) Does the Earth orbit the Sun

(B ) Does the term 'one year' indicate this phenomena

Apparently, the combination of these two questions would stump half the population on a gameshow such as 'Jeopardy' or 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire'.

I remember when people were asked on the street a few years ago, “Who is the Vice President ?”, only about half could name Biden. I’ll bet if you ask that question again today, less than half would be able to come up with Pence’s name.
