The LOTR books are very different from the fight-fests that were the movies. The books are more about fellowship, family histories & lore, songs, poems & traveling through Middle Earth. The movies also took liberties with the plotting.

You could try reading The Hobbit, a reasonably short introduction to the cycle (the movies took great big honking liberties with that slim volume).
