South China Sea: China defiant as tribunal backs Philippines

Quote:
China has firmly rejected an international tribunal ruling that its claims to rights in the South China Sea have no legal basis.

President Xi Jinping said China's "territorial sovereignty and marine rights" in the seas would not be affected by the ruling "in any way".

But he insisted China was still "committed to resolving disputes" with its neighbours.

The Philippines brought the case to the Permanent Court of Arbitration.
The tribunal, based in the Hague, ruled that there was no evidence that China had historic rights to the waters or resources that fell within its "nine-dash line", and was violating the Philippine's sovereign rights with its operations there.
So, what next? Looks like China is going to thumb its nose at the Hague tribunal.

Do the Philippines or the US make a move?

The situation in this area has been simmering for quite a while now.

And there are large stakes in play. Multi-billions worth of shipping use the area and it is thought to be highly prospective for oil and gas.

We'll let Canada, and the rest of our "allies", take care of this. How's that sound?

Thanks from Sabcat and coke

I agree. I wish we would dump the UN, dump NATO and dump NORAD. Tell everyone your on your own for your own defense. Wonder how long their precious social safety nets would remain?

The Philippines is still a third world country, what good has the American presence there done since 1938.Absolutely fkn nothing.General Macarthur was forced out of there in 1942 by the japs.He said I will return.Yes he returned and made the japs retreat, but the country is still in the top ten poorest countrys in the world. Thanks MacArthur. The japs would of made the country a power house in 20 years. What good are the USA military bases on the two main islands. They are just serving USA military intelligence.
Thanks from coke

We should be uniting with China and helping them steer away from capitalism. First we must get our house in order an seize the means of production and destroy the bourgeois.
