The Long Wait
By Channel NewsAsia Published: 14 Feb 2017 Audio: English
Hong Kong can't build public housing fast enough. Families wait 5 to 8 years to get public housing. Singles, up to 30 years. Failed housing policy is one of Hong Kong's biggest crisis. Why can't the government get it right? What happens to those caught in the long wait?
In this excellent TV programme, Madam Chan, a 72-year-old elderly Hong Kong citizen, is retired and has no income. However, she is forced by the public housing authority to vacate her home within a month for abusing her public housing flat. Based on random checks, the public housing authority suspects she does not live in her house. Her records show no electricity usage for 6 days in 3 months and no water usage for 53 days. Meanwhile a group of well-off public housing tenants has escaped scot-free even though they own expensive cars.
Hong Kong is the most expensive place on earth to own a home. The total number of applicants on the waiting list is close to 300,000. No wonder there are annual street protests in Hong Kong culminated in the Umbrella Movement from 26 September to 15 December 2014.
