I'll be back

"Here lies a wounded bear. Once recuperated, he'll be back with a vengeance." -- reedak

1. Jens Stoltenberg warns of converging threats as Russia mobilises estimated 100,000 troops on EU’s borders. The following are excerpts from a news report, by Daniel Boffey in Tapa on 8 September 2017, under the headline "Nato chief: world is at its most dangerous point in a generation" at https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...ns-stoltenberg

(Begin excerpts)
The world is more dangerous today than it has been in a generation, the head of Nato has said, days before the mobilisation of an estimated 100,000 Russian troops on the EU’s eastern borders, and as a nuclear crisis grows on the Korean peninsula.

Jens Stoltenberg, secretary general of the military alliance, said the sheer number of converging threats was making the world increasingly perilous.

Asked in a Guardian interview whether he had known a more dangerous time in his 30-year career, Stoltenberg said: “It is more unpredictable, and it’s more difficult because we have so many challenges at the same time.

“We have proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in North Korea, we have terrorists, instability, and we have a more assertive Russia,” Stoltenberg said during a break from visiting British troops stationed in Estonia. “It is a more dangerous world.”

From next Thursday, over six days, Russian and Belarusian troops will take part in what is likely to be Moscow’s largest military exercise since the cold war. An estimated 100,000 soldiers, security personnel and civilian officials, will be active around the Baltic Sea, western Russia, Belarus and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, without the supervision required under international agreement....

Stoltenberg said the troops’ “defensive” mobilisation was a message to Russia that an attack on one Nato ally was an attack on all, and that he remained confident of the security of eastern Europe. But he expressed concern at Moscow’s imminent failure to live up to its international obligations for exercises involving more than 13,000 troops to be open to observers, including overflights. Some Baltic states estimate that about 100,000 Russian troops will be involved in this year’s exercise and Poland claims the Kremlin has requisitioned more than 4,000 train carriages to move military personnel west... 2. As far back as Oct 7, 2011 in a debate at a US political forum, I had pointed out the possible comeback of the Bear.

"The glory that was Greece and the grandeur that was Rome." -- Edgar Allan Poe

Comparing their past and present, it's safe to say those two great civilizations will never regain their past glory and grandeur.

The same can be said of other ancient civilizations or great empires like Egypt, Iraq, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, etc. Their glorious past has gone forever like the “Age of Dinosaurs”.

However, it will be at the Americans' own peril to write off the Russians from the global power equation as Russia has many national requisites necessary for aggrandizement such as its enormous size, well-educated population, abundant oil and other mineral resources... (End excerpts)

The absolute cultural rottenness of the Russian ruling class has no real parallel in the West, and by and large the Russian people give this rottenness a bye.

Outside of the major metropolitan areas, the citizens of this nation, which has enormous potential, live in third world conditions or worse. Vast swaths of Russia are essentially depopulated. Everyone wants to live in the cities, and who can blame them?

Alcohol and alcoholism remain a huge problem. The official consumption figures may be ignored. Moonshining is ubiquitous. Some Russians will drink anything containing alcohol including bath lotions and cheap perfumes. Alcohol-related fatalities are a leading cause of death in Russia.

The Bear isn't sleeping. The Bear is passed-out drunk.

It's sad. They used to be our competitive brothers and rivals, and now look at them. A tale of two sons- one's a drunkard living in squalor and vindictiveness, the other a corrupt local politician trying to run away from the past he wishes he could return to. If Dad Rome was still around he'd be ashamed.
