Watch out for American Road Pirates

Quote:

American police are targeting their northern neighbors, according to a travel warning from the Canadian government.

State and federal law enforcement officers are reportedly shaking down Canadians visiting the US, illegally confiscating legally carried cash.

Over 61,000 of these incidents have occurred since 9/11, resulting in $2.5 billion being seized, according to The Washington Post. RTís Alexey Yaroshevsky has more details on the trend.

And I thought the Canadians are decent, honest and hard working people and now they are being targeted by the US Treasury for transporting ill-gotten gains across the border for money laundering purposes, tsk tsk.

Under civil forfeiture, the burden of proof is on the property owner to prove their innocence to get their stuff back. This turns the common criminal-law principle on its head: When it comes to civil forfeiture, you are guilty until proven innocent.

Two years ago a wide-ranging Washington Post investigation shined a spotlight on the practice, finding that, since Sept. 11, 2001, more than $2.5 billion in cash seizures had occurred on the nation's highways without either a search warrant or an indictment. Those findings prompted some limited steps toward reform at the federal level.

But the forfeitures uncovered by The Post investigation, and the reforms taken to limit them, happened under the auspices of federal law. There is a completely different universe of forfeiture activity that happens strictly under state law.

Oklahoma has some of the most permissive forfeiture laws in the nation, according to a 2015 report by the Institute for Justice, a civil liberties law firm. The group gave the state a D-minus on its civil forfeiture laws, citing no conviction required to forfeit, poor protections for innocent property owners and a statute that allows up to 100 percent of forfeiture proceeds to go directly back to law enforcement, creating a possible profit motive.

American road pirates are very indiscriminate about their victims. Their only goal is the confiscation of wealth. Do not let them fool you w/ theid tricky slogans like "protect and serve"

My favorite Canadian joke, as told to me by a restaurant waiter in Puerto Vallarta...
What's the difference between a Canadian and a canoe?

Once in awhile a canoe will tip.
Thanks from Twisted Sister and Jimgorn

Also insert teacher and a number of racial slurs. Though teachers do give Canadians a run for their money

I know from experience that Canadians do not like being called Canucks. The National Bird of Canada is the Loon and when I called them loons a fist fight almost erupted. Canadians are overly sensitive and need to calm down.

No, we currently do not have an official national bird. And most often we are associated with the Canada Goose.

Currently the Grey Jay is being proposed as becoming our official bird.

It is more commonly called a Whiskeyjack, at least in Western Canada.

OK but the Loon is on more than a few Canadian coins with Queen Elisabeth II Rex on the reverse and the Loon on the obverse depending on how you look at it. The Alberta Rose is the state flower of Alberta and the Cherokee Rose is the state flower of Georgia.

Just a guess but the Shagbark Hickory is the state tree of Tennessee.
