A new survey of American voters shows that Fox News viewers are significantly more misinformed than consumers of news from other sources.December 15, 2010 | Yet another study has been released proving that watching Fox News is detrimental to your intelligence. World Public Opinion, a project managed by the Program on International Policy Attitudes at the University of Maryland, conducted a survey of American voters that shows that Fox News viewers are significantly more misinformed than consumers of news from other sources. Whatís more, the study shows that greater exposure to Fox News increases misinformation. So the more you watch, the less you know. Or to be precise, the more you think you know that is actually false. This study corroborates a previous PIPA study that focused on the Iraq war with similar results. And there was anNBC/Wall Street Journal poll that demonstrated the break with reality on the part of Fox viewers with regard to health care. The body of evidence that Fox News is nothing but a propaganda machine dedicated to lies is growing by the day.

In eight of the nine questions below, Fox News placed first in the percentage of those who were misinformed (they placed second in the question on TARP). Thatís a pretty high batting average for journalistic fraud. Here is a list of what Fox News viewers believe that just aint so:

  • 91 percent believe the stimulus legislation lost jobs
  • 72 percent believe the health reform law will increase the deficit
  • 72 percent believe the economy is getting worse
  • 60 percent believe climate change is not occurring
  • 49 percent believe income taxes have gone up
  • 63 percent believe the stimulus legislation did not include any tax cuts
  • 56 percent believe Obama initiated the GM/Chrysler bailout
  • 38 percent believe that most Republicans opposed TARP
  • 63 percent believe Obama was not born in the U.S. (or that it is unclear)

The conclusion is inescapable. Fox News is deliberately misinforming its viewers and it is doing so for a reason. Every issue above is one in which the Republican Party had a vested interest. The GOP benefited from the ignorance that Fox News helped to proliferate. The results were apparent in the election last month as voters based their decisions on demonstrably false information fed to them by Fox News.

By the way, the rest of the media was not blameless. CNN and the broadcast network news operations fared only slightly better in many cases. Even MSNBC, which had the best record of accurately informing viewers, has a ways to go before it can brag about it.

The conclusions in this study need to be disseminated as broadly as possible. Foxís competitors need to report these results and produce ad campaigns featuring them. Newspapers and magazines need to publish the study across the country. This is big news and it is critical that the nation be advised that a major news enterprise is poisoning their minds.

This is not an isolated review of Foxís performance. It has been corroborated time and time again. The fact that Fox News is so blatantly dishonest, and the effects of that dishonesty have become ingrained in an electorate that has been been purposefully deceived, needs to be made known to every American. Our democracy cannot function if voters are making choices based on lies. We have the evidence that Fox is tilting the scales and we must now make certain its corporate owners do not get away with it.

That is so true.

FOX tilts every single story against Obama and the Democrats. That would be ok if they admitted to being a mouth piece for the GOP.

But describing FOX as "Fair and Balanced" is a sick joke.

haha This was probably published by a liberal It's always good to get both sides of the story, which is why I do tune into Fox.

If Murdoch wasted his time and read that article, I'm sure his reaction would be "I wish we had that much power."

The best quote was "by the way, the rest of the media was not blameless. CNN and the broadcast network news operations fared only slightly better in many cases. Even MSNBC, which had the best record of accurately informing viewers, has a ways to go before it can brag about it."

Gee, is the writer biased? MSNBC admits its liberal slant, yet this writer says it is the network that "accurately informs" its viewers.

I'm not saying MSNBC is any better, if anything they are worse.

But FOX tilts every story in an anti-Democrat, anti-Obama way, even stories that are barely connected.

It's one thing to have "hosts" with a particular pov but when they show the same bias in their regular news reporting it's wrong.

Let's face it the standard of news reporting in the US is abysmal, more about entertainment than imparting information. The local news is just as bad, treating the audience like kids who need to be spoon fed.

And do we really care if someone is filling in because so-and-so has the day off?

All part of the continuing "dumbing down of America".

Thank God for the BBC!

We could single out a single news source as you did. You conveniently left off the many partisan British tabloids.

We should get our news from whereever we want and let the market place of ideas be free. If the left is for free speech, diversity, openness, and inclusion like they claim then let's see some instead of this mocking and insulting of people who are different from them but love this country. Americans have had enough of this crap from the left. Stop calling Americans racist and homophobic and islamophobic simply because they disagree with you. The left needs to grow up.

Apparently, people posting in this thread didn't read the article in the OP. The study shows that Fox news consistently misinforms it's viewers and that those viewers have gotten incorrect ideas about things from it. And it said that liberal leaning MSNBC was more accurate. Hell-oo.

You're not getting it. I don't care what your article says. I will get my information from where I want to. I don't like the tone and agenda of MSNBC. I find it heavily biased to the left. I find Fox more balanced and with much more integrity. Obviously, according to ratings, you and MSNBC are irrelevent.

People have choices of where they want to get their news. I'm going to add a little humor here. I'm sure most of you remember the late-Walter Cronkite who for many years delivered the news for CBS.

Back when "All In The Family" was in its early programming, Archie Bunker was interviewed by a CBS news crew while he was working. The topic was about Richard Nixon (Archie calls him 'Richard E. Nixon', not Richard M. Nixon.) who was president at that time.

Archie comes home and a few minutes later this conversation follows:

Archie Bunker: I'm gonna turn this thing on and get it ready. [turns on the television set] Edith, what channel is Kronkite on?

Edith Bunker: Channel 2, Archie. The one we don't watch 'cause you always say Walter Kronkite is a Communist.

Archie Bunker: I never said that, Edith. The man ain't all red.

Much to Archie's dismay, the TV conks out and Archie has to find a way to see himself on the news.

Call it information if you like, but in fact when you're watching Fox new, you are getting misinformation. So whatever, choose to be misinformed, but you aren't entitled to your own facts. They are what they are. If you like Fox, that's great for you., but you are not getting the same amount of actual facts as people who watch MSNBC. I would prefer to be one of those that are not relevant, but informed with real data and facts any day. Integrity would require Fox to tell you the truth, which has been proven repeatedly that it doesn't do.

I left them out because British tabloids are the last place you will find any substantive, impartial news reporting, other than who is the latest football player to shag someone else's wife!

But The Sun always has a topless bird on Page Three.

That's why Page Two (International news) is the least read page of any newspaper.

The Sun is owned by Rupert Murdoch who also owns FOX News.

It is the biggest selling newspaper in Britain over 4 M copies a day, which only proves that ratings and accurate reporting are not connected in any way.

That is the point of this article. Not that viewers of FOX are stupid but that they are being given false information, per the examples given:

None of these statements is true. They are all false but all perpetrated by FOX

That is exactly what I said, when you watch Fox news, you are given misinformation. And when you have the wrong information and believe it, that makes you dumb. No?

Now you're repeating word for word Lawrence O'Donnell. I don't call what MSNBC dishes out to be "facts". Lawrence O'Donnell is an admitted socialist and you're quoting his words. I don't want socialists giving me information. No thanks.
