The regressive left’s hatred of free speech

Berkeley has been all over the news this spring, and for all the wrong reasons. As an alumnus of the University of California, Berkeley, I can almost physically feel the value of my degree deflate as I read the headlines.

In February, a scheduled speech by Milo Yiannopoulos at UC Berkeley was cancelled at the last minute because a riot on campus broke out resulting in broken windows, a fire, and thousands of dollars worth in property damage. In March and April, two pro-Trump rallies in downtown Berkeley ended in bloodshed as fights broke out between antifa agitators and alt-right goons — what has become known at the “Battle of Berkeley.” Finally, this week, UC Berkeley has once again given another conservative speaker the run-around, cancelling and then inconveniently rescheduling a speech by Ann Coulter, citing safety concerns.

The Onion perfectly satirized the free speech crisis at Berkeley with a story yesterday: “Berkeley Campus On Lockdown After Loose Pages From ‘Wall Street Journal’ Found On Park Bench.”

So much can and has been said about each one of these incidents. As always, it’s disturbing how little respect many Berkeley students and community members have for free speech. However, it’s unsurprising. The regressive left has been a powerful force in the California town I once called home for decades, earning its nickname — “The People’s Republic of Berkeley.”

However, what’s really scary is how little the authorities have done to keep the mob at bay. The police essentially stood aside in both the Milo incident and Battle of Berkeley, allowing mob violence to rampage unfettered. In fact, Berkeley’s police chief has even gone so far as to defend his department’s passive presence.

The Coulter incident this week has confirmed what many free speech defenders have long suspected: Berkeley authorities are kowtowing to the mob.

When the riots on Feb. 1 ended a planned speech by former Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos at Berkeley, we condemned the violence. However, we tried to be cautious in our statements about the actions of the Berkeley administration, as it seemed plausible that the campus police were simply overwhelmed by the number of protesters and the intensity and scale of the violence. But in the weeks following the incident, Berkeley appears to have done nothing to prevent events like the Feb. 1 riots from happening again.

Should any violence or even threat of violence should from a conservative event, the modus operandi of Berkeley police and the UC Berkeley administration has been to sit aside and watch their town burn.

This passivity is an assault not just to free speech and property rights, but the very rule of law itself — the fundamental value of a free society. If order is not enforced at any threat of violence, we are not living in a society governed by laws, but by the ruthless will of thugs.

Ann Coulter has refused to reschedule her speech, vowing to come to campus on April 27 as stated and signed in her contract. Berkeley now has a choice — to finally defend a free society or take a final bow to mob rule. This is a choice that must be made by the UC Berkeley administration, University of California Police Department and Berkeley Police Department together.

Coulter and other conservatives have made her choice to not stay silent when their rights are under threat. The question is now, will Berkeley authorities be ready this time to defend them?

The full blown Marxist-Leninist-Stalinist takeover of the once soft left is done. And useful idiots abound here on DTT.

...but...but...her words make my feels not good. Nazis are bad and need punching. Trump is a sexist, homophobic, racist hitler. When I don't get my way I throw a tantrum. This has always worked for me in the past. My YUPPY, helicopter parents told me I was special and I always got a trophy. this has been reinforced here in The People's Republic of Berkeley. Now get out of my safe space.

Good or bad UC Berkeley is your alma mater and say it with pride to friend or foe.

I haven't been following all the campus dramas of "safe zones" and calls to ban certain speakers at different universities, mostly because my formal education ended at grade 12, but colleges and universities are not the real world most adults (except academics) have to live in. At best, they can provide guidance and an education for kids furthering their education in a specialized field.

But, over the last year, I feel like I don't have any choice as college campuses become battlegrounds between black block anarchists (Antifa) and a motley collection of fascists and white race supremacists inviting speakers like Richard Spencer, Milo, Charles Murray and Ann Coulter. Is banning or blockading rightwingers from a college auditorium a wise strategy for anyone on...or claiming to be on the left?

I don't know a whole hell of a lot about this disgraced gay rightwing huckster-Milo, but of the four, Richard Spencer is the only one that I would agree with putting a stop to...same as any Nazi leader!

Ann Coulter...the kids who are clamouring to stop Ann Coulter this week have done her the biggest favor she could have for the past 10 years! Ann Coulter hasn't been relevant to the right since....well, to be honest, since she started losing her looks 20 years ago! Face it! She looks like a typical ridiculous old grandma still dying her hair blond and running around in black miniskirts to show off her varicose veins! RightWingWorld is mostly male, mostly older and mostly into younger women. So, every time she's tried her old standby strategy of increasing the shock value of her statements, she's ended up losing book deals and banned at the big events like CPAC. Just sayin - the ill-advised backlash against Coulter is the only thing that has made her relevant again!

And Charles Murray? An older, soft-spoken conservative/libertarian academic -- No one would have ever heard of him if he hadn't collaborated on that big, bloated hack of fake scholarship called "The Bell Curve" back in the mid-90's. The book was so fawning over IQ scores as the definitive measure of all forms of intelligence, and so sure that intelligence is genetically determined that it was easily stomped into the ground by psychologists and all of the gene researchers studying the epigenetic effects of environment on gene coding of proteins, that even most of the white supremacists abandoned it for other arguments...including Murray himself!

So, apparently Murray is still at it, still writing books making the case for selfishness as a virtue and doing nothing for the poor. The Berkeley protesters who invaded his speaking engagement were apparently offended by The Bell Curve and Murray's most recent book "In Our Hands: A Plan to Replace the Welfare State" dredges up the arguments Robert Malthus applied two centuries ago to lobby for removal of "the poor laws" providing food and aid to the poor in England a long time ago. Malthus declared that helping the poor makes them lazy and less interested in working and more interested in having babies....tell me if Malthusian thinking isn't still with us today! Critics of this argument have termed it "the perversity thesis" (based on simple reasoning about other people's motivations) and the primary objection to it is that Malthus based it on his interpretation of human nature without even looking for any evidence to support it(there were statistics available on the numbers using services mostly provided by the churches, and did ending the poor laws decrease pregnancies? NO). And today's Neo-Malthusians like Murray, similarly have flimsy evidence to support the claims also!

So, why aren't these college anarchists (assuming they're in school) arming themselves with knowledge instead of strategies to stop rightwing speech? If anything, shutting down and preventing someone from speaking gives anyone on the right and even in the undecided middleground the impression that the left is trying to hide something. It's a losing strategy to think you can just shut down offensive speech and not have to develop your own theories to counter it or even bother explaining why you believe what you believe!

Another big problem here is that this campus left is trying to use the power of the institutions to do their dirty work. These same institutions apply the same rules when they try to stop groups like BDS from organizing on campus or prevent anti-Zionist speakers like Rania Khalek and Max Blumenthal from speaking. So, all I can say is it's a dumb strategy all the way around!
