Selma, Lord, Selma

I was channel surfing, came across a movie called Selma, Lord, Selma, and started watching it. It's basically about events involving MLK Jr. & so far I've only seen him in a scene where he's in jail. One of the scenes shows a young black girl trying to get some water in a cup from a water fountain with a sign on it that says "white" (yeah, that's exactly what I saw, it didn't even say "whites only", just "white").

Shortly afterwards, there's a scene showing a light blue VW Beetle, and when I saw that it kinda struck me that this isn't something that was happening 150 years ago, that shit was happening in the latter part of the 20th century!

This was a common sight in my childhood.

When I saw one I'd run over the the colored fountain and jump on it and start drinking. I'm about 4 or 5. My mom or super-racist Aunt Trudy would grab me and swat my butt ... You can't drink there .... Why not mommy? Black people are people too........

....circa early/mid 50s in Houston, Texas.

The last recorded lynching was in 1981.

1960s north Louisiana and south Alabama. I was at the end of second grade or early third grade before the first black child showed up at my school. I remember segregated bathrooms, even at the cattle auction.
