Until the late 1960s there was a sign at the county line of every road into the county informing blacks they were NOT to be found in the county after dark. There's a county in Alabama that had the same sign. These were the facts of life in the south in the 1950s and early 60's.
I was born in 1939 in al. lived in louisiana from 1965 until 1978, then moved back to al........I have never seen one of those signs, I've heard of them, do not doubt it one bit...I have never seen one...
Back in 1971, couple of friends of mine in Shreveport LA had a really rocking band. They had gigs as far away as Dallas, or Oklahoma City, Houston, Baton Rouge, you get the idea.

They were hired by the owner of a black nightclub, nice guy, had seen and heard the band, name of Rain btw, and liked them. The band had a funky rather than hard rock edge.

When Pat the keyboardist got home early Saturday morning from playing Friday night, one of the windows on the front of the house was broken. His shaken wife said a car had stopped out front, a guy got out and threw this rock and a note tied to it through the window and drove off.

The note said please tell your husband not to play at n****r night clubs. Pat said fuck it, played there Saturday night. That evening, the boys returned, went inside, had held a knife to her pregnant belly, and made it clear that unless Pat stopped playing in n****r night clubs, people could get hurt.

They reported it to the sheriff and he promised to look into it. You know. 1971. In northern Louisiana.

He also must have slept through the Medgar Evers assasination in Louisiana.

I'd feel happier about attacking Urbrother if I ever heard in any American current forums of the greatest American since Lincoln. Paul Robeson. We pretty well worshipped him here, but McCarthy made him an Unperson, which he seems to remain.

Not a thing.
However, your posts on this thread make you "guilty" of being completely ignorant of what like was for black people in the American south in the 1950's.

You claim to have never personally seen one. Yet you say you have "heard of them do not doubt" they existed.
What is your point?

Well, I don't know that he's the greatest American since Lincoln, but, trust me - he's very well known and respected here.

I was born in north Louisiana in 1960. I clearly remember the signs. Rest areas, cattle auctions, restaurants. My first year of school was still in La, my second year was in south Alabama. NO BLACKS in either school. The first black kids showed up half way thru my 3rd grade year.

You were a teenager in Alabama in the 1950s ?? You HAD to have attended a segregated schools. You would have been 24 the day George Wallace, who ran on a segregationist platform, stood in the door of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa to stop black students from entering. That was the same year the klan blew up the church in Birmingham. Two years later was the Selma march. You'd be been 16 during the Montgomery bus boycott.

How can you possibly be so ignorant of the reality of racism in the south ????
