Choosing your own: Definition of race becoming fluid

Quote:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rachel Dolezal, born to white parents, self-identifies as black — a decision that illustrates how fluid identity can be in a diversifying America, as the rigid racial structures that have defined most of this country’s history seem, for some, to be softening.

Dolezal resigned as the leader of the NAACP’s Spokane, Washington, branch after questions surfaced about her racial identity. When asked directly on NBC’s “Today” show Tuesday whether she is “an African-American woman,” Dolezal replied, “I identify as black.”

Her parents identified her as white with a trace of Native American heritage, and her mother, Ruthanne Dolezal, has said Rachel began to “disguise herself” as black after her parents adopted four black children more than a decade ago.

Dolezal isn’t the first person to make this type of change. Millions of Americans changed racial or ethnic identities between the 2000 and 2010 censuses, even though their choices may have contradicted what their skin color appeared to be, or who their parents said they are.

Race is bullshit anyway. I'm Black in America, but I'd be Igbo if I was in Africa. An Arab is an Arab in America, but he'd be Sunni, Shia, etc. in the Middle East.

I think Rachel Dolezal is a moron, but why is she being vilified while transsexuals are to be honored for their bravery and strength for being "who they are"? If a man can wear a dress, a girdle and makeup and basically lie to society their real gender, why not someone who chooses to be another race of they are happy, and feel in their psyche that they are that race? To me it is a double standard.

A tranny man can say "I am a woman inside" is honorable but a white chick who feels inside she is black is a liar and a mental case? Why?
Thanks from guy39 and Sabcat

I'll disagree with you on this one with a strong caveat. I could see a very, very small percentage of the population identifying with a group so much that they internally become part of that group.

However, if it is done merely to gain some monetary or societal benefit it is truly wrong.

The same as pretending to be trans to get into the other sex's bathroom to sneak peeks.

Why. If gender is a social construct then why not race?

In fact a much stronger case could be made for race than gender IMO

But typical of you, you do not bother to make a case, or even attempt to be part of a conversation. You just yell down insults from your ivory tower.
