Civil Forfeiture. Legalized stealing

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...did-last-year/

Here's an interesting factoid about contemporary policing: In 2014, for the first time ever, law enforcement officers took more property from American citizens than burglars did. Martin Armstrong pointed this out at his blog, Armstrong Economics, last week.

Officers can take cash and property from people without convicting or even charging them with a crime yes, really! through the highly controversial practice known as civil asset forfeiture. Last year, according to the Institute for Justice, the Treasury and Justice departments deposited more than $5 billion into their respective asset forfeiture funds. That same year, the FBI reports that burglary losses topped out at $3.5 billion.

I do not think i would object to the confiscation of ill gotten gains after a conviction, but the current mess throws out the presumption of innocence.

A wife shouldn, t lose the family car because hubby steps out to pickup a prostitute. And that does happen now.

We must give up this silly notion of private property and relinquish everything to the grand authority of the state. Then and only then can we find the bliss of perfect equality

You can't thank the great leader Ronnie Raygun.

I love these kinds of posts, where the only thing that is always left out is the glorious leader responsible for it.

Can't have one without the other.

Never been a President that had more contempt for the Constitution in the history of the country than Ronnie. We're still paying for it.

And the righties will never figure it out.

That sabcat guy might have a point about separating the states.

Being free of anything Ronnie Raygun would be well worth it.

It's now possible for a drug dealer to serve time in a forfeiture-financed prison after being arrested by agents driving a forfeiture-provided automobile while working in a forfeiture-funded sting operation.

Did you copy and paste this from The Onion, skews?

Civil forfeiture laws regarding guilty property have a long history. The doctrine of in rem forfeiture dates to the 1500s under the the deodand doctrine in English common law, then US common law, and then federal statutes by the 1st Congress under customs. It is not rocket science to know that Reagan was born a long time ago, but never met Jefferson or Madison.

There are three Presidents in a class of their own regarding contempt for the Constitution: Lincoln, Roosevelt, and Obama.
