my Coworker Matt is an African American he was born in Africa came to the US LEGALLY and became an US Citizen.
African-American is an American of African descent. I don't know about Reverend Jackson or his background. But, I think he refers to himself as African-American, so I'd go with that.

Yes, your co-worker is African-American.

A black man from Haiti who has never been anywhere near the continent of Africa is not African American. He's black - or Haitian - or American.

Jesus, the way you right wing looney tunes can go on and on and on in the most boring and boorish fashion is, indeed, quite tiresome.

No wonder people lose their patience with you and start calling names...it's about the only thing left for a sane person to do - beside quit the forum.

I know he was not born in Africa.. Not even sure if he has ever set foot on the continent.

First Humans appeared in Africa.. So that makes US ALL African American if that is your basis.

I know that Reverend Jackson was not born in Africa - was his grandparents?

My mother was born in America - but her parents were both born and grew up in Germany. Therefore I am a German-American.

God. Use Google. Don't argue about meaningless shit so much. Jesus.

If his grandparents were born in Africa they would be African American

My ancestors were born in Africa... (sorry I have only gotten my heritage on my Fathers Father's side of the family traced back to my Great Great Grandfather that was a slave in VA that was Freed in 1859 by R.E. Lee.)

"African-American” refers to descendants of enslaved Black people who are from the United States. The reason we use an entire continent (Africa) instead of a country (e.g., “Italian-American”) is because slave masters purposefully obliterated tribal ancestry, language, and family units in order to destroy the spirit of the people they enslaved, thereby making it impossible for their descendants to trace their history prior to being born into slavery. This was all in an effort to prevent enslaved people from organizing and revolting their bondage (look up Nat Turner).

Some prefer to be called Black Americans so out of respect, we use terms that are culturally acceptable to the race we are referring to.
JUDAS!! Get a life.
Silly isn't it. All of these terms to describe one species, homo sapian sapian. The Out of Africa Theory has been proved beyond a reasonable doubt but why are we the only naked ape? Outer space monsters did it.

FWIW not all 'African Americans' wish to use that term..in particular, many black radicals reject the American part because Africans were brought to America from West Africa down to Angola, against their will and found themselves enslaved on a foreign continent stripped of their culture, family ties, languages etc.. My general rule of thumb is call people by the names they choose/not the ones you want to label them with!

What about the Whites from Africa? We know that the Northern Africans usually want to be be identified as Arabs, even though Black History revisionists want to claim that every glorious history of Africa is Black, such as the Pharaohs (modern day Egypt), Hannibal of Carthage (modern day Tunisa), and so on.
That's not black history revisionism! Take a look at ancient Egyptian art for example, or the number of times Cush from the Upper Nile in present day Sudan conquered Egypt for reasons why the truth is exactly the opposite of the point you're trying to make here. The truth is the popular presentation of Ancient Egypt has been to make it whiter/not darker!

And there were no Arabs in Africa during these times. Should be obvious..Arabs come from A-R-A-B-I-A. Arab tribes invaded and migrated across the Red Sea and the Sinai over a period of many centuries changing the racial and cultural mixtures. The original North Africans were Berbers/not Arabs. Some groups of Berbers such as the largest-the Tuaregs living along and in the Sahara Desert are still there in spite of Arab admixture and many still speak their original Berber languages/not Arabic.

What about the European Whites that had settled in Africa and have been there for generations? For example, if a White man in South Africa calls himself a South African, he obviously identifies with Africa.
That should be obvious: he's a settler colonialist! Regardless whether his ancestry is the Dutch Boer Calvinist heretics or the money-driven colonialists who came later from other countries in Europe to establish colonies to harvest the wealth of Africa till the present day under banking colonialism!

Quote:
What are Blacks that are Canadians called? I don't think I've ever heard the term African-Canadian.
I've heard of it, and some use Afro-Canadian, while most blacks here have come from Jamaica, Trinidad, Haiti or other Caribbean islands and still identify themselves as such if they still have strong ties with their homelands.

No, you are an American.
German is not a race, its a nationality, seeing you are not eligible for a German passport, only a US passport, you are an American.

I get the interest in ancestry. But I'll never understand the need for a hyphenation.

To the OP, there are a lot of "not nice people" in every racial delineation.

Why is pointing out inconvenient facts being racist? My ancestors were just as impure as his were. There are very few people left on Earth that can claim "purity". I wouldn't dare to call myself pure Caucasian and proud of it, so why should I not call him out and give him a touch of reality? It is like that White Supremacy guy on some show that agreed to a DNA test and discovered that he was part Black. Claiming purity is the pure step towards racism which then becomes married to claims of superiority, and then is often followed by discrimination, persecution, war, and even genocide.
