I find this hypocritical http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/112/hr2 killing health care act.

Where were the job killing shouting republicans back in the mid and late eighty's when I lost my job because of what Reagan and H. Bush did (or did not do ) . Sign a bill into law that would have protected my job ,my wife's , my fathers , my aunt and uncle along with several neighbors . But neither one of the presidents signed the bill.

It's no longer economic to make shoes and clothes in countries like the US. Did they move production to Bangladesh?

I don't have a lot of sympathy for people who say they lost their jobs because of some political decision. You need to take care of yourself to keep yourself employable. It indicates to me that your job wasn't that important in the first place.

Government should not be in the hiring business...
Then why is the government constantly monitoring the unemployment rate?

They are all economic indicators, sometimes referred to as the "economic fundamentals".

Regardless of the reasons its never easy to be "let go" from your job.

Like the saying goes, " a recession is when your neighbour loses his job, a depression is when you lose yours"

Quote:
In rejecting a Federal panel's recommendation to protect the ailing domestic shoe industry against the imports that have captured 76 percent of the American market, President Reagan last week put his free-trade principles ahead of Republican political concerns. In the short term, there is Congress to worry about. Mr. Reagan promised more active efforts to ''root out'' unfair trade practices of foreign countries, presumably by using punitive actions permitted under Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Act. But White House officials said they expected a backlash on Capitol Hill, where 300 bills that would curb various imports have already been introduced. Some key legislators said that rejection of the shoe industry's pleas will reinforce protectionist sentiment in Congress and could lead to moves to limit Presidential discretion in trade cases. (One of the stronger protesters was Senator John C. Danforth, Republican of Missouri, one of the biggest shoe producing states. Mr. Reagan is scheduled to stop over at Independence, Harry Truman's hometown, tomorrow, on his way back to Washington from his California vacation. Mr. Danforth, it turns out, will not be at Mr. Reagan's side -''just a matter of schedules that don't match,'' Stephen W. Hilton, press secretary, said.) In the longer term, there is the question of the Congressional elections of 1986. Republican strategists are worried that the Democrats, who have been emphasizing their protectionist credentials, will make political capital out of the shoe decision.

That's from the article linked to. How is that what you got from that article, pen?
