Why Attempt To Obstruct Gun Bill Will Damage The GOP

Robert Creamer: Why Attempts to Obstruct Gun Violence Bill Will Damage the GOP

On Wednesday, supporters of legislation to limit gun violence failed to muster the 60 votes necessary to stop a Republican filibuster of the Toomey-Manchin compromise that would expand background checks to include all commercial gun sales in the United States.

Polls show that universal background checks are supported by 90 percent of Americans -- including a vast majority of gun owners and Republicans. A clear majority of senators are fully prepared to pass a background check measure. But no matter -- the Republican leadership decided to obstruct the democratic process in the Senate to prevent an up or down vote on the measure.

Conventional wisdom continues to hold that, while the vast majority of Americans support universal background checks, in many areas it is still smart politics not to antagonize the NRA and their relatively small number of very active -- very passionate -- supporters. Conventional wisdom is wrong. Here's why:

Reid has a hidden agenda.

As for the Repubs, it is a positive for them. But if they support the immigration bill, which I just heard is basically blanket amnesty, they are through.

Another fine piece of propaganda brought to us by skews and the Huffington Post, and of course with the usual mixture of infantile phrases and misrepresentations.

The first lie is the filibuster. It was the Republicans who put the bill up for a vote without a filibuster; second lie is the legislation did not have the mechanism or the intent to limit gun violence; the third lie the 90% support universal background check; and the fourth lie is the damage it will have on the Republican Party considering this is how gun control ranks among those who could cause the damage to the Republican Party by the latest Gallup Poll:
  • Economy in general 24%
  • Unemployment/Jobs 18%
  • Dissatisfaction with Government 16%
  • Federal budget deficit/Federal debt 11%
  • Healthcare 6%
  • Ethical/Moral/Family decline 5%
  • Immigration/Illegal aliens 4%
  • Education 4%
  • Guns/Gun control 4%
  • Situation with North Korea 4%
  • Lack of Money 3%
  • Welfare 2%
  • Lack of respect for each other 2%
  • Poverty/Hunger/Homelessness 2%
  • Foreign aid/Focus overseas 2%
  • Taxes 2%

Harry Reid voted no because that allows him to bring it up again as a procedural vote.

Not very familiar with the Senate rules huh?

Apparently you have forgotten how inaccurate Gallup was during the election last year. I'm sure those women, Millenial, Hispanic, and Black voters will be sure to give you a painful reminder in the next couple of election cycles. I do want to thank those Senators for guaranteeing a Hillary Clinton Presidency now. The only question left to be answered is how bad it's going to hurt Republicans in Congressional elections next year. And hurt they will be. The Dems only need 18 seats to take back the House, and will now with more certainty than less retain control of the Senate. How do you think that's going to work out for conservative causes in the years following? I see you're from Texas. That's to bad. Texas will be decidedly blue in a 10 year or so span after Hillary is elected. And the slow agonizing death of the conservative agenda continues.

I guess we will see in the next election cycle when the Democrats that were the only thing preventing the bill fro m having an up or down vote are voted out of office per your very insightful observation and prediction.

Considering that you have never posted one article that was not based on lies, I think I will take your credibility into account on that. Plus at 4%, I don't think anyone gives a rat's ass about some moronic gun control bill that would have accomplished nothing other than avoid the real problems.
