Judge orders Google to turn over data to FBI warrantless demands for customer data.

SAN FRANCISCO -- A federal judge has ordered Google Inc. to comply with FBI warrantless demands for customer data.

U.S. District Court Judge Susan Illston on Tuesday rejected Google's argument that the so-called National Security Letters the company received from the FBI were unconstitutional and unnecessary. Illston ordered Google to comply with the secret demands even though she found the letters unconstitutional in March in a separate case filed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

She acknowledged as much in her four-page order in the Google case made on May 20 and obtained by The Associated Press on Friday.

It’s official. The Senate voted 72-23 last week to extend the FISA Amendments Act another five years, which President Obama signed Sunday. Unfortunately, the public discussion of George W. Bush’s warrantless wiretapping program may soon fade back into the shadows.

Remember prior to Obama, it was only legal on INTERNATIONAL calls...

Clinton used warrantless taps on several occations, Bush via patriot act expanded the practice.

Thanks to Obama. domestic calls are now subject to warrantless taps.

The National Security Agency has been secretly collecting the phone call records of tens of millions of Americans, using data provided by AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth, people with direct knowledge of the arrangement told USA TODAY.

USATODAY.com - NSA has massive database of Americans' phone calls

News reports in December 2005 first revealed that the National Security Agency (NSA) has been intercepting Americans’ phone calls and Internet communications. Those news reports, combined with a USA Today story in May 2006 and the statements of several members of Congress, revealed that the NSA is also receiving wholesale copies of American's telephone and other communications records. All of these surveillance activities are in violation of the privacy safeguards established by Congress and the US Constitution.

After the Patriot Act was signed into law there were hundreds of articles published about warrantless wiretaps and the invasion of privacy. It was also a lively subject for debate on talk shows.

This went on for quite some time and both liberals and conservatives were asking all the right questions. But over time, this all died down to nothing more but a quiet murmur. We more or less moved on as a country to other issues. And now that we have a radical liberal in the White House only a handful of voices continue to cry foul.

What scares the hell out of me is that we have come to accept this sort of behavior by our government as normal. Or the new normal as talking heads like to say. But it is every bit as dangerous to individuals as it was ten years ago. Probably more so now because it is so embedded in our everyday lives.

Later today I will get on an airplane with my family, and we will be treated as criminals in the process. Here again, the new normal is to be assumed guilty long before we even leave the house to go to the airport.

When I post this message on the forum it will be monitored by Uncle Sam. So will any emails I send. My cell phone can be used to track my whereabouts. When I use my credit card to fill up with gas that information will be recorded in a national database. In short, there’s not a hell of a lot I will do today, tomorrow, or the next day that will not be watched by the watchers.

Which brings me to the main question: Who is watching the watchers?

I understand your concern Hondo, but in the current world in which we live would you not want all the passengers boarding your plain to be subject to the TSA before your family is airborne ? Throughout our history we've struggled with the balance between liberty and security and we will continue to do so. During World War 2 we interned Americans of Asian descent. At that time the American people didn't have a problem with it. What the correct balance is in an era of terrorism is a difficult question. I'm more concerned with corporate America's big brother attitude. They can't use national defense as an excuse.
