Pope Francis asks for forgiveness for Church over child sex abuse

The Pope has just asked for forgiveness for the Church for the previous handling of the child sex abuse crisis and for the abuse:

BBC News - Pope Francis asks forgiveness for child abuse by clergy
Quote:
Pope Francis has asked for forgiveness for the "evil" damage to children caused by sexual abusers in the clergy.

In quotes carried by Vatican Radio, he described the abuse as a "moral damage carried out by men of the Church", and said "sanctions" would be imposed.

It is being described as his strongest statement on the issue so far.

Last month, Pope Francis strongly defended the Roman Catholic Church's record on tackling sexual abuse by priests, following UN criticism.

The Pope set up a committee last year to organise help for victims of clerical sexual abuse but has been accused by some Catholics of dragging his feet in acknowledging the extent of the moral and mental damage caused by paedophile priests, the BBC's David Willey reports from Rome.

'Sanctions'
Pope Francis made the statement on Friday, during a meeting with a Catholic children's non-governmental organisation, the Vatican Radio website reports.

He said he had felt compelled to "personally ask for forgiveness for the damage [some priests] have done for having sexually abused children".

He said that the number of priests who had committed abuses were "quite a few in number", although "obviously not compared to the number of all the priests".

"We will not take one step backward with regards to how we will deal with this problem, and the sanctions that must be imposed," he said, adding: "We have to be even stronger".

In an interview last month, Pope Francis defended the Catholic Church, saying: "No-one else has done more [to tackle child sexual abuse]. Yet the Church is the only one to have been attacked."

It came after a UN report accused the Vatican of systematically placing the "preservation of the reputation of the Church and the alleged offender over the protection of child victims" - something the Church has strenuously denied.

The Catholic Church has faced numerous allegations of child sex abuse by priests around the world and criticism over inadequate responses by bishops.

Earlier this year Pope Francis strengthened Vatican laws on child abuse, broadening the definition of crimes against minors to include sexual abuse of children.

While in office, predecessor Pope Benedict XVI apologised to victims of child sex abuse, saying he was "truly sorry" for the "sinful and criminal actions" committed by priests.

So what? That has nothing to do with him asking for people to forgive the church over the child abuse that occurred by Catholic Priests.

I'm sure he's sorry it happened, but is he sorry that the church so actively hid the problem, covered up the incidents and protected the priests who committed the crimes and generally ignored it all till criminal trials made that impossible?

(That is called REPENTANCE)

Jesus to said to the one that sinned "Go and Sin no more" God knows there is no way to truly right the wrongs of the past.

His Holiness made other remarks as well today --

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

http://wdtprs.com/blog/2014/04/pope-...ther-families/

Today the Pope spoke during his non-Magisterial, off-the-cuff fervorino at morning Mass in strong terms not just about generic, impersonal “evil”, but about the Enemy of your soul, the Devil.

From VR:

“We too are tempted, we too are the target of attacks by the devil because the spirit of Evil does not want our holiness, he does not want our Christian witness, he does not want us to be disciples of Christ. And what does the Spirit of Evil do, through his temptations, to distance us from the path of Jesus? The temptation of the devil has three characteristics and we need to learn about them in order not to fall into the trap. What does Satan do to distance us from the path of Jesus? Firstly, his temptation begins gradually but grows and is always growing. Secondly, it grows and infects another person, it spreads to another and seeks to be part of the community. And in the end, in order to calm the soul, it justifies itself. It grows, it spreads and it justifies itself.”

[...]

“We are all tempted because the law of our spiritual life, our Christian life is a struggle: a struggle. That’s because the Prince of this world, Satan, doesn’t want our holiness, he doesn’t want us to follow Christ. Maybe some of you might say: ‘But Father, how old fashioned you are to speak about the devil in the 21st century!’ But look out because the devil is present! The devil is here… even in the 21st century! And we mustn’t be naïve, right? We must learn from the Gospel how to fight against Satan.”

Also today, the Pope spoke about clerical sexual abuse, appropriate given how he started off the morning. VR:

Pope Francis also spoke about the need to reaffirm the rights of parents to decide “the moral and religious education of their children” and reject all forms of “educational experimentation with children and young people”.

He said that it is every child’s right to grow up in a family “with a father and a mother” capable of creating “a suitable environment for the child’s development and emotional maturity”. The Pope also called for an end to what he termed as “educational experiments” with children and young people, pushing a “dictatorship of one form of thinking” on them in the name of a pretended “modernity”.

The Pope noted that the “horrors of the manipulation of education that we experienced in the great genocidal dictatorships of the twentieth century have not disappeared; they have retained a current relevance under various guises and proposals”.

Looks like the Pope's definition of the modern family doesn't match the left's.
