Colorado Law Shows Anti-Gun Nuts are Lying

Anti-gun nuts have been quoting the 40% number of private gun sales for years, even after being shown that it was a lie. Now that we have hard data from Colorado we see that instead of 40% it is actually significantly lower than 4%.

APNewsBreak: Gun law based on flawed estimate

"Gun-control advocates have long asserted that 40 percent of gun sales nationwide are made by private sellers and thus not subject to background checks. President Barack Obama cited the number last year, unsuccessfully urging Congress to pass a law mandating "universal background checks."

In total, there were about 311,000 background checks done during the first year of the expansion in Colorado, meaning the 13,600 checks between private sellers made up about 4 percent of the state total. Taken together, this indicates that the number of newly mandated background checks that have been performed is even lower than 13,600.

Of the 13,600, there were 260 denials the first year under the expanded system. But because of how state data is compiled, however, it's unclear how many of those denials are tied to the new law, and how many happened under existing rules such as the gun-show requirement."

How bogus. This is assuming the all private sales were reported to begin with. Private gun sales represent a black market and must be regulated.

Exactly how do you regulate a black market?

The Colorado data shows it is a non-issue.

Here is the actual study cited by Obama and all the other anti-gun nuts. It was from the 20th century and based on 500 phone calls. The actual results are similar to the numbers we are seeing Colorado. Claiming that 40% of guns are bought in secret clandestine unregulated sales is dishonest.

So it's because you can't see the fraudulent voters that you need voter ID but the same logic doesn't apply to black market gun sales?

Why would an ID matter in illegal gun sales?

You must have an ID and undergo a background check to buy a gun. It is illegal to buy a gun for someone else. It is illegal to give or sell a gun to someone who cannot own a firearm legally.

All the Colorado law does is make it a hassle to transfer a firearm to a friend or family member who can legally own guns. Making the illegal transferring or receiving a firearm more illegal doesn't deter criminal activity.

The Colorado law was passed on claims that 40% of firearms are purchased without a background check, which has been proven to be false.

First, ID for gun sales wasn't my point. The point is liberals claim that studies show there are very, very few cases of voter fraud so ID isn't necessary while conservatives claim that it isn't true, it is that the voter fraud isn't detected. But now, conservatives claim that studies show there are very, very few cases of undocumented gun sales so tougher laws aren't necessary while liberals claim that it isn't true, it is that the undocumented sales aren't detected. Sort of a flip-flop by both.
