Republicans Again Violate Their Own Principles

Republicans Again Violate Their Own Principles*|*David Morris

Quote:
. . .

All of which makes the debate about renewing and replenishing the months-long federal highway trust fund so revealing. This spring Republicans made clear their position: No new taxes. Rep. Dave Camp (R-MI), speaking for himself and his party declared, "I do not support, and the House will not support, billions of dollars in higher taxes to pay for more spending" on transportation.

Camp's position might be reasonable if he and his fellow Republicans were at the same time willing to abide by another of their basic principles: Live within your budget. If you don't have the money, don't spend it. In this instance, if drivers are unwilling to pay the road budget then cut federal highway spending by 28 percent, which would reduce overall national road spending by about 7 percent.

But Republicans don't want to cut road expenditures. They just don't want drivers to pay. The result has been months devising strategies to divert money from other sources. In May, in a memo to rank and file House Speaker John Beohner (R-OH), Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) insisted they had come up with a perfect "way to ensure continued funding of highway projects in a fiscally responsible manner." They would make up the highway-financing gap by eliminating Saturday postal delivery! To ensure that the roads are adequate for delivering the mail they will no longer deliver the mail.

. . .
Republicans violate their own failed policies because they HAVE to violate them. Their failed policies do not work.

IMO, in this day of email and internet interaction at so many places and at so many levels, Saturday mail delivery is somewhere between a silly expenditure and an out and out stupid idea. I'd cut back to 3 days a week if I was dictator and given the speed of snail-mail a day or two delay wouldn't even be noticeable. Canada hasn't had Saturday deliveries for about 40 years and no one misses it.

Canada is in the process of converting from home delivery to a series of mail boxes in neighborhoods. The main critics of this was of course the postal union even though the rate of conversion is limited to the letter carrier attrition rate so no one was fired. Many people objected, but observers were sent by an opposition party and they were quite disappointed to find that most people didn't bother checking on a daily basis.

So saving money on Saturday mail delivery strikes me as wise. And probably infrastructure expansion or maintenance is one of the better ways of spending the freed-up money.

Republicans don't want drivers to pay to fix roads. They want to get the money from somewhere else for a short term solution. They're all smoke and mirrors when it comes to taxes.

That's not the point. The Postal service serves many people, the bulk of whom are poor and they serve small businesses, as well. REAL small businesses. Not these billion dollar corporations claiming small business status.

Your opinion on this suits you. But the postal service STILL stays afloat despite all the republicans have done to try to shut it down like requiring they have their full pension monies in the bank, not caring if Mitt Romney STEALS the pensions of companies he takes over, or if corporations LOSE the pensions the employees have set aside on the stock market, or if States declare their pension funds have been robbed from and there's no money to pay it back.

This is another anti-minority bill from republicans. And it's one that has been contrived and created by republicans.

Mail used to be delivered seven days a week. The telegraph killed that.

The fact that we have not changed our mail system since then strikes me as asinine.

That surprises me. I would have thought you would have suffered the same type of "blue laws", that is laws greatly restricting any type of commercial activity on Sundays. When I was a kid, where I lived even restaurants weren't allowed to open on Sundays. And you had postal workers on the job?

When the mail service was first set up mail was delivered seven days a week. There was an attempt, by the religious leaders of the time, to prohibit Sunday mail delivery because it violated the Sabbath.

Senator Richard Johnson of Kentucky, chairman of the Committee on Post Office and Post Roads, drafted The Sunday Mail Report in response to the petitions. In the report Johnson argued that prohibiting Sunday mail delivery violated the First Amendment prohibition on making "no law respecting an establishment of religion" because it would amount to Congress establishing Sunday as the Sabbath.

Sunday mail delivery was finally halted in 1912 for the simple reason that the telegraph could deliver messages faster and that most businesses (the largest Post Office customer) were closed on Sundays.
