America Has More Low-Paying Jobs Than Any Other Developed Country

America Has More Low-Paying Jobs Than Any Other Developed Country

Quote:
America may be exceptional in many ways, but it also tops the charts of a new, troubling ranking.

The U.S. has more low-paying jobs than any other country in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, an economic group of 34 developed countries, according to a research note released by Morgan Stanley on Monday.

Economists Ellen Zentner and Paula Campbell based their analysis on the OECD Economic Outlook Report, which documents employment and labor trends in each member nation.

The OECD defines "low-paying" as jobs that earn less than two-thirds of a country's median income. On average, around 16 percent of jobs in OECD countries are considered low-paying. In the U.S., over 25 percent of all jobs qualify as such.
Check out the chart in the article. It all comes from the right wing "austerity" plans cutting taxes for the rich and then getting rid of the safety net for 99% of the people.

We can thank the Republican controlled Congress from 1994 - 2006, and the republcian filibustering senate from 2007 to now for this top ranking. Their economic policies generate poverty.

I know five Macca's franchisees from Rotary. None had complete university educations that I can think of. One was a copper...another was a real estate salesman...another sold chickens to supermarkets. I can't recall what the others did. Among them...today...there's fourteen outlets, in all among them. They work like heck, day 'n night. To get to where they are...they mortgaged and borrowed to the point of oblivion. Toss twenty years into the mix and now they are rich beyond all avarice.

What people have against this particular organisation is beyond me. IMO, this is the prefect franchising model and a great example of unfettered Capitalism. Next time you are "forced" to eat in one...look at the manager. The guy in this photo is a manager...I can tell from his smile. Twenty more years and he'll own a couple of 'em...what'll you be doin'?????

It's not all about austerity measures IMO. You can't ignore the trend over the past 20 years of shipping millions of jobs to cheap Third World labor markets. That created a surplus of labor in this country and downward pressure on wages. As labor costs continue to increase in the Third World and the effects of 10,000 Baby Boomers retiring every day, these trends will naturally reverse. We were at the top of the labor chain when the global economy broke out. It was inevitable in that respect.

"The OECD defines "low-paying" as jobs that earn less than two-thirds of a country's median income."

In Nigeria, there must be very few "low-paying" jobs.
