And Now for Something Completely Different

Good for them. I was not expecting this in several ways.

Islamic State crisis: UAE female pilot in air strikes

The United Arab Emirates' first female air force pilot has taken part in air strikes on Islamic State targets in Syria, UAE officials have confirmed.

Recent photos of Major Mariam al-Mansouri in her F-16 jet were released as a report circulated that she had led her squadron in Tuesday's raids.

While the UAE is a largely conservative state, it has seen pioneering efforts to allow women to occupy top jobs.

A son of Saudi Crown Prince Salman, Khaled, also joined the air strikes.

Commenting on the involvement of Major Mansouri, a UAE source told AFP news agency that a "coalition Western officer was surprised when she called in to refuel from [an] aerial tanker".

News of her mission electrified sections of social media, with tweeters hailing her as "the woman of the day" and using the hash tag "ladyliberty" to praise her. Angry Islamist sympathisers denounced her "criminal" act.

(My bold)

Any ordinary car is probably too tame for her by now. She'd need a Maserati & the equivalent of the Autobahn.

& a fighter jock & she's not married to her ride? Get real. Those little Electric Jets are supposed to be a blast to drive.

Yeah, you can tell how the guys have really taken to her as part of the team: She only has to walk four paces away from them instead of the customary six.

Yah, I suppose if she were still considered subservient, she'd be 15 paces back & she'd be lugging all the helmets, side arms, & maybe a stripped-down coffee service & cups.

Nah, I don't think you get the killer instinct you need in a combat flight leader by tarting up a Chihuahua. Women do better, pound for pound, @ high-g maneuvers, pain & stress resistance. As I recall, they tend to do better @ math & spatial orientation than men, but that's just my memory.

WRT to the physical advantages of women in high G manoeuvres, I gather it's because they tend to be shorter and less muscular which means better blood supply to the brain, so that would seem to make sense. But I doubt that's the reason for this woman getting her wings. I think they're just paying minimal lip service to equality to impress their new allies.

The UAE, Kuwait and Qatar have always been wishy-washy Muslims. PN probably could tell us if this is still true, but in the '70s a friend of mine worked in the UAE and tells me in law they considered the desire to consume liquor a sickness, so you could go to a pharmacy and get a prescription for the poison of your choice, which the pharmacy could also sell to you. At the time, Haig Pinch was the antibiotic of choice.
