Backlash Grows as Leaked TPP Text Reveals Increased Corp. Control of Public Health

This is a bit of a left-leaning site, so has anyone seen a different evaluation of these bits of wikileaks releases?

Quote:
As the Obama administration praises the benefits of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), backlash continues to grow against the deal. WikiLeaks has just published another section of the secret text - this one about public healthcare and the pharmaceutical industry. Newly revealed details of the draft show the TPP would give major pharmaceutical companies more power over public access to medicine, and weaken public healthcare programs. The leaked draft also suggests the TPP would prevent Congress from passing reforms to lower drug costs. One of the practices that would be allowed is known as "Evergreening." It lets drug companies extend the life of a patent by slightly modifying their product and then getting a new patent. We speak to Peter Maybarduk of Public Citizen and John Sifton of Human Rights Watch about their concerns.

The entire TPP is one giant mess. Shame on those supporting it, and on those playing this year's model Nancy Pelosi.

As a generalization, I am a great fan of free trade. This however sounds like the opposite, to me.

As always, the devil is in the details. We really need a truth in titling acts, regulations and agreements law.

I just can't accept in a democracy that a major trade bill that will effect so many has to be "secret" and we have to resort to hoping Wikileaks will tell us about it. I can't bring myself to trust Obama on this one because he clearly doesn't trust us with transparency regarding such a major issue.

Democrats, including Nancy Pelosi who is another democrat female that threatens your right wing johnsons, were against it. The republicans supported it.

Democrats Rebel To Block Obama's Trade Deals

Quote:
. .

"If TAA slows down the fast-track, I am prepared to vote against TAA," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said on the House floor. “Because I'm sad to say it’s the only way that we will be able to slow down the fast-track. If TAA fails, the fast-track bill is stopped.”

The TAA measure was included in the fast-track bill in a bid to win Democratic support. But it attracted opposition because funding for the program was seen as too low, and because the Senate decided to pay for it in part by cutting $700 million from Medicare.

House Republicans tried to smooth over that problem with a proposal to vote on TAA separately from the main fast-track bill -- known as Trade Promotion Authority, or TPA -- and an alternative funding structure that they said would not harm Medicare. But Democrats still felt the assistance was inadequate, and argued that the new funding structure still amounted to voting to take dollars away from Medicare.

"Unfortunately, the TAA proposal is really short for 'taking away assistance,'" said Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas) on Friday. "It includes substantially less funding than the administration has said was essential to protect those who lose their jobs through expanded trade."

. . .
Hopefully, the trade deal falls apart as well.

Who can tell. It appears to be another "you have to pass it to know what's in it" situation.
