Chipotle’s Mass Restaurant Closings And America’s Broken Food Safety System

Chipotle's Mass Restaurant Closings And America's Broken Food Safety System | ThinkProgress

The investigation is being conducted by local and state health officials along with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Washington State Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Chipotle is already facing lawsuits from two recent foodborne-illness-related incidents. In August, over 100 people — 82 Chipotle customers and 17 employees — at one Chipotle in Simi Valley, CA, fell ill from norovirus infections. (Fun symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.) To amend health code violations, the restaurant closed for a day. In that same month, 22 Chipotle restaurants in Minnesota were found to be the source of an outbreak of salmonella Newport bacteria. Health officials determined that tomatoes were the cause of the outbreak; over 45 cases were reported.

Meanwhile, the Food Safety Modernization Act — the 2011 piece of legislation that gives the FDA mandatory recall authority, as well as expanded regulatory powers — requires $580 million to be effective, according to the Congressional Budget Office. But Congress has provided less than half that amount. As ThinkProgress reported earlier this year, agency officials say this budget shortfall “undermines their efforts to significantly improve the food safety system that has failed to prevent nearly 48 million foodborne illnesses annually, nearly 3,000 of which result in death.”

No surprise to anyone that republicans are not going to fund the necessary money to keep Americans safe here at home, is it?

you mean the FDA cannot find 500 million out of:

Quote:
The FY 2015 Budget includes $4.7 billion for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), an increase of $358 million, or 8 percent, above FY 2014. This increase consists of $23 million in budget authority and $335 million in user fees.
OOOPS they have got a budget of 4,700 million dollars.

I suggest people prepare their own food from the grocery store or grow their own. It is cheaper, healthful and you know who prepared the food and how the food was prepared. On the negative side the dishes have to be clean and the pots and pans which requires elbow grease but worth the extra effort.

Atlanta has strict restaurant inspections once a month. Displayed in every restaurant is the last month's grade from the health department prominently displayed on the wall next to the cash register. Graded using the old school grading system of A+ to F-.

That let me know if I want to eat there or not. That might work for Simi Valley.

And if you had a monthly income of 4,700 and you were spending that on mortgage, food, insurance, etc. and then you got hit with another $500 a month bill, how would you "find" the money?

If I recall correctly (and I do) it's the conservatives/GOP that complains most about unfunded mandates.

Do you have a clue as to how a budget works?

The money is allocated by program by congress.
