ISIS Fighters Kill Navy SEAL In Iraq

STUTTGART, Germany, May 3 (Reuters) - Islamic State fighters killed a U.S. serviceman in northern Iraq on Tuesday when they overran Kurdish defenses in the biggest attack in the area in recent months, officials said.

The man, later confirmed as a Navy SEAL, was the third American to be killed in direct combat since a U.S.-led coalition launched a campaign against the jihadist group in 2014.

“It is a combat death, of course, and a very sad loss,” U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter told reporters during a trip to Germany.

A senior official of the Iraqi Kurdish peshmerga force said the man was killed near Tel Asqof, a town 28 km (17 miles) north of Mosul, which the militants occupied at dawn on Tuesday. Early information suggested he had been killed by a sniper, Jabbar Yawar said.

The leader of a Christian militia deployed alongside peshmerga in the Tel Asqof area said the town had been attacked by multiple suicide bombers, some driving vehicles laden with explosives.

A U.S. military official said the U.S.-led coalition helped the peshmerga repel the attack with air support from F-15 jets and drones.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the man was killed “by direct fire” from Islamic State.

Carter’s spokesman, Peter Cook, said the incident took place during an Islamic State attack on a peshmerga position some 3-5 km behind the forward line.

SNIPERS AND SUICIDE BOMBERS

Peshmerga were surrounding Tel Asqof and coalition aircraft were targeting militants in the area, according to Safa Eliyas, head of the Nineveh Protection Forces (NPF) militia.

“Until now there are suicide bombers trapped inside (the town).” Another NPF member on the front line said they were awaiting an armored division to storm the town, where Islamic State snipers had also taken up positions.

The peshmerga also deflected Islamic State attacks on the Bashiqa front and in the Khazer area, about 40 km west of the Kurdish regional capital Erbil, Kurdish military sources said.

In mid-April the United States announced plans to send an additional 200 troops to Iraq, and put them closer to the front lines of battle to advise Iraqi forces in the war against Islamic State.

Last month, an Islamic State attack on a U.S. base killed Marine Staff Sergeant Louis Cardin and wounded eight other Americans providing force protection fire to Iraqi army troops.

The Islamist militants have been broadly retreating since December, when the Iraqi army recaptured Ramadi, the largest city in the western region. Last month, the Iraqi army took the nearby region of Hit, pushing them further north along the Euphrates valley.

But U.S. officials acknowledge that military gains against Islamic state are not enough.

Iraq is beset by political infighting, corruption, a growing fiscal crisis and the Shi’ite Muslim-led government’s fitful efforts to reconcile with aggrieved minority Sunnis, the bedrock of Islamic State support.

Being killed by the enemy is possible in any branch of the US Armed Forces that all active duty military personnel accept in their job description. Kill the enemy before the enemy kills you.

If Iraqis stayed in Iraq and Americans stayed in the US, we wouldn't have so many problems with Arabs. Stir up a hornet's nest and you get stung.

I was pulling a rotary mower with a tractor in the Land Bank. Drove over a bumblebee nest and stung multiple times. Put the tractor in road gear at full throttle to escape the enraged bumblebees thus tearing up the rotary mower that I forgot to disengage from the PTO. The old farmer was pissed at me but I helped him fix the rotary mower and learned a valuable lesson.

Hold on, we aren't at war in Iraq any longer. How is it possible that we have a combat death, when we only have "advisors."

That's an easy one. It was very clearly spelled out in the last sentence of the article.

Iraq is beset by political infighting, corruption, a growing fiscal crisis and the Shi’ite Muslim-led government’s fitful efforts to reconcile with aggrieved minority Sunnis, the bedrock of Islamic State support.

The Sunni populations in the cities of Iraq despise the puppet government installed by the Bush administration, that was supposedly democratically elected ( remember all of the pictures of purple fingers? ), of which were mainly participated in by Shiite populations in the south after the war, as most of the Sunni areas were decimated by the war, and the Kurds having no say so at all. The Sunnis in the Anbar Province, along the Euphraties, in the cities of Ramadi, and Falljuah, and in the north in the city of Mosul, would rather align themselves with ISIS, who are ex Bathists of Saddams supporters, and officers in his military, both of which were disbanded by US forces.

Which is why we have an ISIS in the first place.

To add ignorance on top of ignorance, the belief that if we would have kept soldiers in the Green Zone after the war, would have stopped ISIS from forming, which didn't happen anywhere near Baghdad, so it would have happened, with or without a US presence in the south, of which wasn't going to happen anyway because it was Bush that agreed to the ROFA ( Reduction of Forces Agreement ) by beginning the pullout, because the newly installed Shiite led Malaki government refused to allow US soldiers to be held accountable under USCMJ laws, if any crimes were committed by them, which was a daily occurrence at the time by both US soldiers, and private contractors, instead of Iraqi law that was in force as part of the agreement.

Those of us that almost lost a son in that hell hole have very good memories of the events, as opposed to those who think it's now nothing but a way to score political points, which just makes Gold Star, and Blue Star families just that much angrier over the lie that was the Iraq War.

You know, the same assholes that now want more boots on the ground on a lie they supported in the first place, that now want a means of correcting the mistake they supported for partisan political reasons, and now, just like then, have no problems using other peoples sons to correct their fuck up.

And the biggest irony of all Hollywood. These same assholes will be making posts on the body count under Obama.

USA, USA...
Thanks from Hollywood
