The Civil War in context was not that long ago. Many of us knew someone who knew a Civil War veteran. My grandmother who was born in 1908 obviously knew one or more, her grandfather in law and distant relative who died in 1926 was in the Civil War late, and the very last drummer boy veterans lived to see WWII and in extreme cases, up to the early 1950's.

The South did not forget the Civil War and there was animosity about it for over a hundred years and even today. After 1876 until 1964-5, the South sort of governed itself as a quasi-CSA, with the vast majority of blacks still on white owned farms sharecropping or in peonage. Not much better than slavery and probably in some ways even worse (and again, some of us, especially us over 45-50 years old knew someone who knew someone in their childhood who owned a slave).

The 1960's were sort of a second Civil War with American Presidents sending troops to colleges in the South to force admission of black students, into the 1970's where forced school bussing tried and failed to integrate the schools.

There is a covert and overt operation to slowly erase and diminish white people from history and society. Just is. White birthrates are dropping to the floor in versus to Hispanics in America and Muslims in Europe. The World, if they have not destroyed themselves in a hundred years (which I believe will happen) will enter another (pardon the name) a new Dark Age because there will be so few whites to lead the way in the sciences, technology, architecture and law, and they wont be there when things break down and the rest cannot repair. Ever see the film Idiocracy? Watch that.

Have we taken the Civil War OUT of the American history books? Have we censored decades of hate and division? So ridiculous. Some of those statues have been moved to other places--museums, private property.....

And BTW, there is LOTS of American history that we could display. How about a statue of Osama Bin Laden to commemorate 9/11? Or how about a statue of Hitler to recognize WWII? He was a famous leader...wasn't he?

This nation is trying to move forward--out of the dark ages and into the light.
I see the elimination of one of the greatest of all Americans, Paul Robeson, from history as truly disgusting and racist myself. At the near-height of racism over there our people practically worshipped him. Brilliant athlete, actor, singer and intellectual he, quite on his own, made racism look the crap it was.

This is pretty stupid, imo. Erasing of history is never a good thing, regardless present controversies.

I don't think removing a statue is erasing history.

Statues are takes as homage, something that many of the statues being removed do not deserve in the opinion of many and that's the motivation.

Removing historical statues is erasing history. It also demonstrates and perpetuates an ignorance of history.

Yes, I believe we are. I don't believe for a s second that people are going to learn anything of quality in school rooms of the future that they can still learn about today by visiting these particular sites today and expanding their knowledge by learning both sides of history other than the locally approved versions.

So statues ARE more important--have more impact--serve us better than history books, documents, letters, museums, professors, classes, etc?

Monuments and statues are brick and mortar memorials--nothing more. They are NOT our history. They are art work, created to glorify a divisive time which we now deem to be shameful. We have moved on.
Put the statues elsewhere--a Confederate museum--private property--a botanical garden--a battlefield--a wayside park.
No American is going to forget the Civil War.

I get that. My point of view is is that of history. No person of history is worthy of a statue deserving of preservation based on positive morals alone. Due to the fact that no one of historical importance has lived a sinless life.

To reaffirm, im for preserving all history, the good and bad of it so that we can learn from it and understand how a country was shaped because of, rather than hide in shame of or because of spite.
Thanks from Sabcat
