The GOP pandered for votes, but the connection is real, and it is their doing.
Their politicians have been dangerously using racial dogwhistles for decades. Chump merely took it mainstream. They try to deny their racial hatred but Chump brought it out into the sunshine for everyone to see.

Trump got in, I believe, because he promised jobs, not because he promised racial purity. Americans tend to vote their pocketbook before all other considerations. His rant about illegal immigration, building a wall, banning Muslims, and his ridicule of the handicapped and misogynistic "locker room" banter I think worked against him, which is why he came up 5 million votes short.

Personally I think Hillary ran a negative campaign, posing as the lesser of two evils and spending most of her energies playing defense. Bernie could have taken Trump down in a one-on-one debate, and by offering to reign in corporate abuses and greed at their employees expense, sticking up for middle class workers, have won the election. By giving Hillary an undeserved 500 vote head start at the nominating convention, the Democrats shot themselves in the foot.

No sir. Chump aggressively exploited racial resentments all throughout his campaign. To say otherwise is to ignore reality IMO.

Not just during the campaign.

“When Hillary Clinton got out of law school she was workin' to help advance racial justice in the juvenile justice system in South Carolina, and fight school segregation in Alabama. And I about that time got out of school and was battling housing discrimination in the South, & in Virginia.
At his early career Donald Trump was a real estate guy who got sued by the Justice Department for discriminating against people in housing, writing the letter “C” on applications if they were minority. Umm, he ... Hillary Clinton's got a track-record all the way back to being a middle-schooler in a Methodist youth group of trying to advance priorities for others. And Donald Trump's for himself.” [& has said so explicitly]
Senator (and 2016 Democrat VP candidate) Tim Kaine

Trump promised to deport all the illegal aliens.
But the upside of our flip-flopper in chief is, if you don't like what he says, just listen to what he says about it the next time.

Commenting on Senator John McCain (R-AZ)

"He's not a war hero.
He is a war hero.
He's a war hero because he was captured.
I like people that weren't captured. OK?" Donald Trump: July 2015 seeking the Republican nomination for the 2016 presidential race
Note:
It was Senator John McCain's no vote that ended Trump's efforts to ram "repeal & replace" through the senate.

Ever so painfully slowly, Trump is learning the lessons of the merit of diplomacy.

And you believe that GAINED him votes among anti-democrat-anti-Hillary right wing racist conservatives? I wonder if enough "anyone but Trump" anti-Hillary voters threw their votes away on 3rd-party alternatives like Jill Stein to tip the electoral balance in a few key states like Ohio.

Yes, Chump gained many votes with his racial division. Hitler proved this strategy to be successful on a short term basis. He exploited the racial resentments in this country and created a dangerous situation. This is why we are seeing a spike post election in the number of hate crimes.

I would agree with your last statement. I heard from a watchdog group on racial tension, don't recall the name of the agency but it is credible, that before the 2016 election there were 32 known organized anti-foreign white supremacist groups in the U.S. Since January of 2017 that number of known hate groups that have crawled openly out from under the rocks has grown to nearly 1000. So much so that major social network companies are taking measures to ban their members from using mainstream internet to spread propaganda and to recruit.
