Pennsylvania Company to Pay Record Fine for Illegally Hiring Immigrants

Pennsylvania Company to Pay Record Fine for Illegally Hiring Immigrants

Quote:
A Pennsylvania-based tree-trimming company was ordered to pay $95 million in the largest fine against a company for hiring thousands of immigrants who didn’t have permission to work in the U.S., according to federal officials.

Asplundh Tree Expert of Willow Grove, Pa., pleaded guilty in federal court in Philadelphia on Thursday to illegally hiring the immigrants. Some of the immigrants were in the U.S. illegally, none had authorization to work in the country, according to court documents.

A federal judge ordered the family-owned company to pay $80 million and adhere to an Administrative Compliance Agreement from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE. The details of the agreement weren’t made public.

In a separate civil settlement, ICE said, the company agreed to pay $15 million related to its violation of immigration law.

That'll teach 'em.
Take that 95 million out of revenue and they only have 3.055 Billion in revenue for the year....
They saved more than 95 million by hiring illegal aliens last year.

ILLEGALS...is the right word to use, in this. To post immigrants indicates they are legal...and this says none were. They were here illegally or did not have a work permit, which still makes them "illegal".

Try to quote articles that aren't behind a paywall, please.

From other sources:
Asplundh is a 90-year-old, family-owned company that employs 30,000 workers in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
When did the investigation leading to the verdicts begin:
Homeland Security Investigations began auditing Asplundh Tree Experts on Nov. 19, 2009 to make sure the company complied with federal laws regarding the hiring of immigrants. Companies are encouraged to use E-verify, a database managed by HSI to help them determine if employees are allowed to work in the U.S.
So what did the business owner do?

After being given a list of names, Asplundh fired hundreds of its employees who were ineligible to work in the U.S. Others quit before before they could be terminated.

Yeah, and then what?
After acting like it was complying with HSI demands, Asplundh instead doubled down on its illegal practices, federal authorities said. Many of the some employees just let go were re-hired under different names using fake or illegally obtained documents.
ICE's reaction to the verdict?
"Today's judgment sends a strong, clear message to employers who scheme to hire and retain a workforce of illegal immigrants: we will find you and hold you accountable," Immigration and Customs Enforcement Acting Director Thomas Homan said in a statement. "Violators who manipulate hiring laws are a pull factor for illegal immigration, and we will continue to take action to remove this magnet."

Wow, do you think the owners of non-family owned businesses, you know, the corporations, are shaking in their boots?

I don't think so.

This will most certainly be felt in the illegal employer circle. Stronger sanctions are needed, including prison time.

What? you mean facts?

This is the result of an investigation that began in 2009, do you realize that?
This had ZERO to do with Trump, do you realize that?
(Well,OK, give him credit, he didn't pardon them)

The amount of the fine seems large but Asplundh has over 3 billion in revenue a year, this is 95 million for violations that took place over years.

I applaud cracking down on big companies that hire the undocumented, but that only affects a small portion of the employment.

And realistically, who do you think is going to rebuild Houston?
Who do you think is going to rebuild Florida?
Do you think Trump is going to be shutting down construction sites?
Thanks from Clara007

What has Trump got to do with it? Why are you talking about rebuilding when the issue is SCUMBAG ILLEGAL EMPLOYERS? In CA., I personally know several legal California citizens who have lost their jobs to ILLEGAL ALIENS. So yeah, maybe it's time the construction jobs using illegal alien workers was shut down. Nothing says fallow the law, like the loss of money!!
