Trumka was supposed to stand up to Obama when he sold out labor on his Card Check pledge back in 09....and it never happened and Trumka and the other leaders...like UAW just kept right on telling their members to keep supporting Obama and other neoliberal Dems all the way through. Now that 'big labor' has imploded, minimum wage workers in part time jobs are back to square one and re-examining the strategies that started the labor movement back in the guilded age.

But, if you think the Democrats can govern nationally by appealing just to white professional liberals and trying march minority voters out to the polls, you're only kidding yourself! These people weren't rightwingers before Reagan applied identity issues of race and religion to win them over, and after the collapse in living standards, they would be Democratic voters again if the Dems had anything to offer besides Trump is bad...which seems to be the plan in 2018 and 2020!
I must offer congratulations! Most people don't know/understand/or care that Reagan started this mess!

A large number of them on 'social aid' still think he was a 'great president'.

Personally, I think the main problem with today's average voter is a complete lack of education.

Honestly, I know people who work at Wal Mart and think that unions are a bad idea!

Some of today's union leaders might be corrupt, but the basic idea is still sound.

So what are we saying here...that the RNC siphoning off money that people donated and using it for purposes that may differ from what the donors were led to believe?

Because there has been so much steady propaganda telling us all what a great leader Ronald Reagan was....and don't forget- Barack Obama was one of them..when he first ran for the White House. No doubt that earned the ire of Billy Clinton, but Clinton himself was full of effusive praise for Reagan on so many issues. Without a clear voice of opposition, instead of mushy, middle of the road corporate liberalism, working people who are often too busy trying to pay the bills, look after the kids and get to and from work, have little time to search the internet for real, substantive information...something getting even harder now that the Facebook and Google BORG are determining for us what is/and what is not "fake" news and demonitizing Youtube channels that fall outside of centrist liberal and conservative thought.

Then they need to be educated! There are some who will be motivated primarily by appeals to identity...like race, some who focus in on economic benefits, but the working class in the middle...many of whom could go either way, have been collectively mocked and scorned by the Democratic Party who have decided that they don't need them! And when someone like Bernie Sanders(who is not a real socialist) comes along and addresses some of the class issues affecting working people, he's ruthlessly attacked by the corporate-sponsored hacks that run the DNC and the major candidates who compete with Republicans for corporate dollars.

As for the unions, most of the major unions are run by the men who've been educated in the same universities as the CEO's, and that's a big part of why they're so chummy together. Maybe people need to go back to square one, where it all began....when workers in new sweatshop factories of the late 1890's just decided to walk out or have sitdown strikes and shut production down. They declared themselves a union...which was illegal and resulted in assaults and attacks from police and pinkerton security guards, but they made their point and unions eventually gained some legitimacy....which started to be unraveled back in 1948 when the Truman Administration pushed through the Taft-Hartley Act, which largely prevented forming and joining unions outside of industry and construction trades. The Reuthers and most of the major union leaders(except for John L. Lewis of the Coalminers and the CEO) just went along with the plan because the growing industrialization of America meant everyone would get richer anyway. Then when the shit started to hit the fan in the 70's, that's when those compromises started to take their toll.

More than 30 years ago, Canadian members of the UAW voted to break away and form their own separate union- the CAW. Autoworkers in Canada have been fighting the same defensive battle as US autoworkers, BUT doing a far better job of protecting their workers than what the UAW has allowed..and mostly under Democratic administrations I might add! That GM Bailout that Obama put together for example, was a bailout of the executives and shareholders/NOT the autoworkers...and that's a significant part of the reason why Obama didn't get rewarded for "saving" General Motors by autoworkers in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana! When employees have to agree to plant closures, job cuts and new hires working on production lines for $14.00 an hour, they're not in an exuberant mood. For several years they've been looking for a way to bust out and fight back against Neoliberalism and political and union leaders who sell them out claiming 'it's the best offer available.' I think this goes much of the way to explaining why the Democrats can't take advantage of the worst president in US history today. They're depending on winning by being the only option to Trump, and a lot of people want something better.

I am well aware of the Triangle Shirt Waist Factory Fire...which had its 100th anniversary just a few years ago...I forget exactly because it got so little recognition...aside from Democracy Now and some indy media. For anyone who's reading and doesn't want to be bothered having to look it up, that disaster was a mirror of the sweatshop factory fires and the building collapse in Bangladesh that killed more than 1000 mostly female employees. Only clear difference between then and now, was back then they were up front about who they are and what they want/while today, the companies getting clothing made in Bangladesh, including majors like Walmart and Tommy Hilfiger hide behind the third party operators they set up overseas to run and manage their despicable operations. The direction America is heading in today(think of Wisconsin for example, competing for and getting a Foxxcom plant...yes, the one where workers jump to their deaths from the upper floors to escape...that Triangle Fire is coming to America also!
