Gay Marriage

its been a while since we had a thread about this.

Quote:
Australians have emphatically voted in favour of legalising same-sex marriage, saying "yes" to the historic social change by a substantial margin of 61.6 per cent to 38.4 per cent.

Almost 80 per cent of eligible voters participated in the unprecedented voluntary postal survey, giving the verdict an authority unmatched by most elections globally.

It means Australia is poised to join 25 other countries that have granted marriage equality to gay couples, including the US, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

(prime minister) Mr Turnbull, speaking shortly after the results were announced, heralded the "overwhelming" support Australians had expressed for same-sex marriage.

"They voted 'yes' for fairness, commitment, love," he said. "It is unequivocal, it is overwhelming."

"And now it is up to us, here in the Parliament of Australia, to get on with it to get on with the job the Australian people have tasked us to do, and get this done this year, before Christmas. That must be our commitment."
Same-sex marriage postal survey: 'Love has had a landslide victory' as 'Yes' wins

finally.

Interesting. The impression I got over the past while from articles on the BBC site was that it wasn't that popular an idea.

Congratulations.

Congratulations.
opinion polls have always found it was popular among the young, unpopular with older people. the general feeling with this recent 'voluntary postal ballot' was that younger people would be all millennial and disinterested and have never posted a physical letter in their lives so they would not bother voting, whereas older people would vote more reliably. indeed thats why the conservative party demanded a postal vote, they were hoping the result would be swayed by this bias. a lot of reports also assumed this bias would occur, and the 'yes' side was always nervous. but it didnt happen. the 60/40 split is pretty close to what previous surveys have found. and voter turnout was more than 80% which beats most elections around the world.

I hate Hate HATE that citizens are given the right to vote on the rights of other citizens - like it's a fucking popularity contest.

There is no such thing as "gay marriage". Marriage has always been defined as a man and woman.

I guess if someone important says, "that's the way it's always been", then there is no justification for change. Right?

Two totally different topics. The definition of slavery wasn't changed. The practice of slavery was abolished, the definition wasn't changed.

Your definition of marriage has no legal standing and is important only to you. *shrug*
