Russia Banned From Winter Olympics

Russia’s Olympic team has been barred from the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The country’s government officials are forbidden to attend, its flag will not be displayed at the opening ceremony and its anthem will not sound. Any athletes from Russia who receive special dispensation to compete will do so as individuals wearing a neutral uniform, and the official record books will forever show that Russia won zero medals.

That was the punishment issued Tuesday to the proud sports juggernaut that has long used the Olympics as a show of global force but was exposed for systematic doping in previously unfathomable ways. The International Olympic Committee, after completing its own prolonged investigations that reiterated what had been known for more than a year, handed Russia penalties for doping so severe they were without precedent in Olympics history.

The ruling cemented that the nation was guilty of executing an extensive state-backed doping program. The scheme was rivaled perhaps only by the notorious program conducted by East Germany throughout the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s.

Now the sports world will wait to see how Russia responds. Some Russian officials have threatened to boycott if the I.O.C. delivered such a severe punishment.

In other words: CHEATERS?? How surprising. NOT.

I'm sure that doping was worse in the old days when the East Germans were treating star athletes like lab rats to experiment on! Everyone who looked at some of their female swimmers...like multiple gold medal winner-Kornelia Ender and her 17 or 18 inch biceps knew something was wrong! But until Jimmy Carter started the boycott of the 1980 Olympics in Moscow after the Soviet Union sent troops into Afghanistan to support the communist government, the prevailing attitude was that ALL politics should end when the Olympic Torch was lit, and prior to that, African nations boycotting over Rhodesia was considered bad behavior.

Obviously the Cold War politics were front and center at every olympics games...who won the most medals...who won the most gold medals etc.. But, what's happening now is another sign that conditions are worse than at any time during the Cold War! And fwiw, US Track&Field has been the worst doping violator internationally! It still grinds me that after our Ben Johnson was disqualified and lost his medals and records when he tested positive at the 88 games in Seoul, Canada conducted a full inquiry revealing that the doping was being done in the Bahamas, and almost all of the top 10 finishers that year, from the US, England, Jamaica, Trinidad, were also getting steroids and masking drugs at the same clinic run by Jamie Astaphan. But, with all that, US Athletics never conducted the same investigation of their own programs! So, I'll just go on the assumption that olympic sports is still a game of cat and mouse between athletic federations and controlling officials...just like it is in tour cycling, where there are almost no Russians involved. If Russia is banned from the Olympics and they carry out a counter-threat to abandon the IOC and ban all television and advertising of the games in their own country, this is another ominous sign for things to come!

I loved the indignation the Soviets pretended to have when the IOC insisted on testing the sex of the so-called female Soviet Olympic athletes.

They for sure could have won mustache gold if that were an event.

"Russia Banned From Winter Olympics"
I really don't get that pumped up about it.
But it's worth noting, when Governor Romney ran the Winter Olympics in Utah, he turned a profit.
When Putin ran the Winter Olympics in Socci, it cost a reported $43 $Billion.
That's an indication not only about how TOTALLY Putin DOES NOT GET economics AT ALL !!

But I am curious:
how much of this is about the apparent State sponsored doping from Russia, and how much of it is about Crimea, & perhaps Syria, etc.

Putin's a bad boy, let's spank him?

Too many independent labs detected too many banned PED's in Russian athletes too many times for it to be a political statement.

So selling 20% or more of our uranium to Russia had to be one of the biggest acts of ineptitude ever. Amirite.

Understood.
It's not the issue of punish or not.
It's an issue of severity.
And as President Carter demonstrated, cutting an entire nation out of the Olympics rather more punishes the athletes, than the host nation.

Separate reports indicate some Russian athletes will be allowed to compete.
I didn't get the details.
