Mexico Travel Warning

5 Mexican states get US 'do not travel' warning

Wednesday, January 10, 2018 02:04PM

MEXICO CITY -- Five states in Mexico have gotten the sternest "do not travel" advisories under a revamped U.S. State Department system unveiled Wednesday.

The five include the northern border state of Tamaulipas and the Pacific coast states of Sinaloa, Colima, Michoacan and Guerrero.

The State Department had previously discouraged travel to all or part of the five states' territories but the new warnings are sterner, placing the drug- and crime-plagued states on the same level warning level as Somalia, Yemen, Syria or Afghanistan.

Mexico as a whole has a level-two rating, "exercise increased caution" in the new four-level alert system, because of concerns about crime.

But an additional 11 Mexican states got a level-three warning, "reconsider travel." Mexico has 31 states, half of which are under level 3 or 4 warnings.

I go every winter for a month or so. Hate the fucking cold.
Been going to Jalisco State and Nayarit on the Pacific coast since about 1998 or so.
Beautiful place, avoid the border towns. Go if you have the opportunity, it's a beautiful place.

Wow but hardly unexpected. Ford is going to pull out of Mexico and VW did years ago. Two major Japanese car manufacturers are relocating to Alabama of all places. The natives are restless down Mexico way.

Wow. That must really hurt Puerto Vallarta. Some years ago it was the go-to resort for Canadians.

That's where I almost always go. PV is not hurting at all, there are more Canadians than Americans down there every year. Mostly Canadians from their west coast.

My favorite Canadian joke, as told to me by a waiter in Puerto Vallarta..."What's the difference between a Canadian and a canoe?"

Once in awhile the canoe will tip.

I've been to Hawaii, St. Thomas, The Keys, etc. Lots of tropical warm places. Mexico has no appeal for me. Just a personal choice.

It turns out that even many Canadians don't know that neither the loon nor the Canada goose is our national bird. In fact Canada doesn't have one. There was a big push to make it the grey jay, commonly called the whiskeyjack in western Canada. But it was so contentious that the government chickened out and decided that Canada wouldn't have a national bird at all.

Here is the grey jay:
