Let's stop denying that our mental health system is failing so badly that accurate assessment of individuals that need help/medication is no longer a priority in the schools.

A hundred years ago school shootings were rarer than hen’s teeth. Kids often carried guns to school. Some schools had classes in riflery.

Maybe we should look at what’s changed.

25 years murder-free in 'Gun Town USA'

Quote:
n March 1982, 25 years ago, the small town of Kennesaw – responding to a handgun ban in Morton Grove, Ill. – unanimously passed an ordinance requiring each head of household to own and maintain a gun. Since then, despite dire predictions of “Wild West” showdowns and increased violence and accidents, not a single resident has been involved in a fatal shooting – as a victim, attacker or defender.

The crime rate initially plummeted for several years after the passage of the ordinance, with the 2005 per capita crime rate actually significantly lower than it was in 1981, the year before passage of the law.

Prior to enactment of the law, Kennesaw had a population of just 5,242 but a crime rate significantly higher (4,332 per 100,000) than the national average (3,899 per 100,000). The latest statistics available – for the year 2005 – show the rate at 2,027 per 100,000. Meanwhile, the population has skyrocketed to 28,189.

By comparison, the population of Morton Grove, the first city in Illinois to adopt a gun ban for anyone other than police officers, has actually dropped slightly and stands at 22,202, according to 2005 statistics. More significantly, perhaps, the city’s crime rate increased by 15.7 percent immediately after the gun ban, even though the overall crime rate in Cook County rose only 3 percent. Today, by comparison, the township’s crime rate stands at 2,268 per 100,000.

This was not what some predicted.

What do you mean get more guns in more people's hands, does that include getting them in the hands of criminals to do criminal stuff? That's what gun restrictions and gun bans can end up doing to overall make things easier for criminals or tilt the playing field in their favor.

That's part of the reason I'm opposed to gun any bans and restrictions & no, I'm not saying that getting rid of gun bans and restrictions will solve every aspect of the problems of society has pertaining to that. Providing people with the right education is one thing & one example of that would be firearm safety. Another issue is a possible connection to certain kinds of prescription antidepressants; there practically always seems to be a connection there when the incidents involve seemingly random or mass shootings.

I hate to bring this up at the risk of hijacking this thread (maybe I'll create another thread for this if necessary) but another would be socialism & the reason I say that is because I see connections between the crime and other problems that lead to gun violence (btw, why is "gun violence" the only kind violence that's portrayed as odious? That could be yet another thread.).

In general, or basically, the idea is not to get more guns into more hands, it's to keep the state from deciding who gets to be armed and who doesn't get to be armed. One thing I'm very opposed to is the notion that the state has such a right. I think the lesson we ought to learn from history is that to allow the state to have such a right translates to enabling genocide by that state.

When everyone has the right to keep and bear arms, there's less of a need for anyone to have to keep and bear arms, and there are far less incidents involving gun violence and crime in general. NRA headquarters is only about 1/2 hour from where I live, and I had relatives living in that same city (City of Fairfax, Va); I had relatives who used to live there and they said crime is very low there. We can also see from that town or whatever it is in Georgia where residents are required to own a gun - crime's very low there too, from what I hear.
Thanks from Sabcat
