Dawn of a new Ice Age?

Is a mini ICE AGE on the way? Scientists warn the sun will 'go to sleep' in 2030 and could cause temperatures to plummet

The Earth could be headed for a 'mini ice age' researchers have warned.

A new study claims to have cracked predicting solar cycles - and says that between 2020 and 2030 solar cycles will cancel each other out.

This, they say, will lead to a phenomenon known as the 'Maunder minimum' - which has previously been known as a mini ice age when it hit between 1646 and 1715, even causing London's River Thames to freeze over.

The new model of the Sun's solar cycle is producing unprecedentedly accurate predictions of irregularities within the Sun's 11-year heartbeat.

It draws on dynamo effects in two layers of the Sun, one close to the surface and one deep within its convection zone.

Predictions from the model suggest that solar activity will fall by 60 per cent during the 2030s to conditions last seen during the 'mini ice age' that began in 1645, according to the results presented by Prof Valentina Zharkova at the National Astronomy Meeting in Llandudno.

The model predicts that the pair of waves become increasingly offset during Cycle 25, which peaks in 2022.

During Cycle 26, which covers the
decade from 2030-2040, the two waves will become exactly out of synch and this will cause a significant reduction in solar activity.

'In cycle 26, the two waves exactly mirror each other – peaking at the same time but in opposite hemispheres of the Sun,' said Zharkova.

'Their interaction will be disruptive, or they will nearly cancel each other.

'We predict that this will lead to the properties of a 'Maunder minimum''

<In my best low, low voice> And now the rest of the story:

The 'mini ice age' hoopla is a giant failure of science communication

Fool pseudo-science writers write this, headline hungry editors publish it and gullible deniers believe it.

All across the USA it is and has been unseasonably cold. Here in Chicago we have had lows in the teens. Same on the east coast.

Weather =/= climate.

How many graphs of world temps are needed?

Here's another one for you.

Weather= climate when those on the Left point out warm weather events. That was so a couple of weeks ago with an article about one persons weather observations in Alaska posted by the sole moderator of this forum.

You guys cannot have it both ways.

Is the Daily Mail a reliable source? They seem to have real problems with sensationalist and inaccurate scare stories of science and medical research and of copyright violations.

Has anybody else picked up this story?

If you had read the post instead of imagining what he said you would know that he posted data about a multiyear trend in temperatures, not a few days.

This story was published in July 0f 2015 and summarily debunked in July of 2015. Like cultural issues, these wingnuts long for the past. Even if it is junk science.......

Roughly every two years we’re treated to headlines repeating the myth that Earth is headed for an imminent “mini ice age.” It happened in 2013, 2015, and again just recently at the tail end of 2017.

This time around, the myth appears to have been sparked by a Sky News interview with Northumbria University mathematics professor Valentina Zharkova. The story was quickly echoed by the Daily Mail, International Business Times, Sputnik News, Metro, Tru News, and others. Zharkova was also behind the ‘mini ice age’ stories in 2015, based on her research predicting that the sun will soon enter a quiet phase.

The most important takeaway point is that the scientific research is clear – were one to occur, a grand solar minimum would temporarily reduce global temperatures by less than 0.3°C, while humans are already causing 0.2°C warming per decade.
