In March of 2017--long after Trump took office--Ryan is quoted as saying this:

“There are basically two things that I want to make really clear. I’m not going to defend Donald Trump — not now, not in the future.”

Previously Ryan said things like, "I'm not ready to to back Trump" and "I won't defend Trump". But then, to explain away the many MANY tweets and lies, Ryan says this, "“He’s new to government,” Ryan said, after emphasizing the importance of an independent Justice Department. “So he probably wasn’t steeped in the long-running protocols that establish the relationships between DOJ, FBI, and White Houses. He’s just new to this.”

LMAO.....and the RW accuses the LW of hypocrisy??

Then of all the dumb statements, there's this from Ryan: I have assurances from the White House that Trump will NOT fire Mueller.

There you have it.
Thanks from Camelot

Ryan destroyed his reputation by cowering at the feet of a con man.

Yep and it's become big news. Politico today: The Tragedy of Paul Ryan
He began as a Jack Kemp conservative. He ended as Donald Trump’s man on Capitol Hill.

Quote:
It’s more complicated than that, certainly. History requires nuance and texture. But legacies are reductive by nature. The House speaker announced his retirement Wednesday, closing a messy and mesmerizing chapter in the history of the Republican Party. And for the affable Wisconsin kid who moved to Washington a quarter-century ago, eager to make his mark on fiscal policy, the harsh reality is that he might be remembered more for accommodating the impulses of the 45th president than for crafting a generational overhaul of the tax code.
This is a political obituary of Ryan’s own writing. His silence in the face of Trump’s indignities—and his observance of “exquisite presidential leadership,” a line that will live in infamy—would be less remarkable had he not first established himself as one of Congress’ good guys, someone whose sense of principle and decency informed his objections to Trump’s candidacy in the first place. Indeed, the speaker’s habit of turning a blind eye to the president’s behavior is relevant and revelatory because it was not always so. There was hardly a tougher Trump critic during the 2016 campaign than Ryan, who felt duty-bound to combat the candidate’s dark rhetoric and the party’s nativist drift. Yet there has hardly been anyone softer on Trump since Election Day than Ryan......
More here: https://www.politico.com/magazine/st...s-plans-217989

But looking at the bigger picture, it's not just Ryan who is writing his own obit. It's countless of other "conservatives" who lost their souls to the Trump Dynasty. Although I did not agree with Ryan politically--and really never understood how a small town, blue-collar Janesville guy could spew so much Oligarchy vomit, I think Ryan is a decent man. Obviously, he loves his family--his wife and kids--and wants to do what's RIGHT for them. I think he'll be much happier and so will his family. He just should have done this sooner.
Thanks from RNG and Camelot

If your looking for someone who will not applaud his departure, don't look to me. His tenure as House Speaker was less than stellar. On the other hand, I do believe his reasons for leaving. Those reasons were forefront when he took the job. But it's always fun to read the Liberal, self-serving dribble from the Left.

Yes, and the other 42 Republicans who have announced that they will not be seeking re-election are all about their families too........LOL

You guys are so funny. Ryan is seemingly a pretty reasonable guy. The republicans have been in the past putting up basic centerists for some time as the party that was once the democrats have become more and more radical. Keep pushing this polarized radical agenda and watch as the republicans become more and more radicalized. It is the natural progression of things. How do you think you got trump?

This is soooooo funny.

Nope, the advent of extreme right wing media like FOX, Breitbart and the Gateway Pundit trained the right wing base to be ever more radical. From the tea baggers onward all we’ve seen from the right is that compromise is a bad word and only RINO’s compromise. Hell, they control the whole damn government and still can’t govern. Ryan knows what is coming in 2018 as a result of that vile clown in the Oval Office. He is just 1 of 43 Republican not seeking re-election and that list will continue to grow as we approach November. You can’t point to any such instability on the left. What will be funny is watching Nancy Pelosi being handed the Speaker’s gavel in January.
