Items you would pick for the Alone show?

here's the list of stuff that doesn't count vs

your 10 items, the prohibited items and the stuff that you can pick your 10 items from

Wood Trekker: History Channel?s ALONE, The Most Realistic Survival Show? Or Is It?

I'd take a paracord 2 person hammock, or if that were not allowed, I'd take a solid sheeting hammock, with paracord clews and suspension. If I could not take the paracord hammock, then I'd take the 12x12 tarp instead of a sleeping bag. I'd be cutting up the entire 20x20 tarp into 1/8" strips from which I'd weave netting. Net fishing is the key.

I'd take a Cold Steel shovel, modified to have an 8" saw edge, real offset teeth. I'd take a modified Crunch multitool, with another file blade in place of the phillips, altering the 2 flat head screwdrivers into gouge/hookknife and awl (with slot for cordage). I'd grind the flathead on the file blade to be a chisel, and replace the serrated stainless knife blade with a carbon steel regular blade.

I'd take a 5 qt skillet and lid (Amazon) and one of chief Aj's slingbows, with 4 of the arrows featuring 4-tined fishing arrows. Courtesy of the Crunch, each tine can become a fishhook in a few minutes.

If I could not take the paracord hammock, I'd take the solid sheeting hammock and the fishing kit, (300 yds of fishline 8 treblehooks and 1 single hook.) I'd convert the single hook into a sewing needle, and use the trebles to hook and drown gulls and ducks.

I'd take the gillnet ,preferably made out of 9-strand 750 paracord, but if not, then one that's made of 4 strands (braided) monofilament fishline.

I'd take a big roll of heavy duty duct tape, for making repairs, making fire (with the batteries that they give you, making waterproof, debris stuffed pontoons for my outrigger raft, and for making dry bags, water filter, water containers (out of the sleeves of the rainsuit. It's easy to make a poncho and chaps out of a chunk of the tarp.

I'd make my sleeping shelter out of a 9x9 chunk of either the 12x12 or the 20x20 tarp, depending upon whether I could take the paracord hammock and the sleeping bag. easy enough to dry out a lot of debris, under the 20x20, using hot rocks. Once you have that debris (and a way to KEEP it dry) you dont need the sleeping bag (which you may have had to make out of the 12x12 the first night, using debris. It wont matter if that debris is fully dry for use in this bag, cause you'll be naked inside of the bag, due to condensation issues.

use seasoned, springy forked branches to "power" the single hooks that you make out of the arrowhead tines. With those forks to "set" your hooks, your floating fish sets will be a lot more likely to catch fish.

You need to get a tree blind, and weave netting in it, while waiting for a fat bear to come to the fishheads/guts bait pit. Netting-wrapped sapling frames will serve to catch magpies, jays, blackbirds, coons, possums, skunks that try to steal your bear-bait. they give you a motion activated camera that can tell you when the best time is to lay for the bear.

Take one of the 5 lb rations of food. Pemmican mixed with gorp, cause it's got the most calories, doesn't require cooking, has fat, and is great bait for almost anything.

btw, they took the bear canister off of the item list after I pointed out that it could be metal and 2-gallons. They are constantly trying to assure that the show never lasts more than 3 months. They only pick the inept and the weak for this show, so that there's some drama.

That's some good knowledge you're sharing, all logical, sensible. Have you ever watched "Naked and Afraid"? About one person out of 100 have a quarter of the skills and techniques you've outlined.

Put most people in a wilderness situation, or post-apocalypse if you will, and they'll die within a month.

Well of course, it's intended to ENTERTAIN and not actually teach anyone anything or be a documentary.
The show is about DRAMA.

they certainly aint capable of teaching much of anything. Whether or not that's on purpose, or just the result of the people that they select, not sure.

you know a lot less about it than I do. I'm in direct email contact with several of the competitors. They just aint the sharpest knives in the drawer. That need not necessarily mean that it's all drama. It's quite feasible that they are all just too lazy to do the needed research about what to do.

"aint the sharpest knife in the drawer"?

Given the fact that one time everyone lived in the wilderness, but evolved over time to build things like houses with indoor plumbing and air conditioning, only a total fucking moron would reverse evolve, and wander back into the wilderness with a piece of string and a knife.

If I go out into the wilderness, i'm bringing along a camper with satellite tv and a microwave. With all of the knives with the other silverware in the drawer.
