The tariffs are nowhere close by themselves: but the GOP has a plan. They will also 1) gut medicare/medicaid 2) try to privatize Social Security (got to help Wall Street make more money!!!), 3) gut infrastructure spending (Trump never has instituted that infrastructure project he promised the Trumpanzees, huh? SUCKERS!!!), 4) gut educational spending, 5) gut all social programs including welfare and Planned Parenthood. And many other lovely, lovely things. By the time the GOP finishes stacking the SCOTUS with RW idealogues and crashing the economy this country will look like the Philippines.

I would have sworn that is republican behavior. Maybe it is true of people in both parties? We have not educated for independent thinking and that leaves people dependent on being told what to think. This is an education problem, not a political party problem.

They will try to go down that road, but the failure of Trump's policies will be evident and the electorate will swing to the left.
The Democrats will get the economy back on track, and the GOP will be resurgent, as people forget what they did last time.

That is the Grand GOP Strategy, wait til people forget what they did last time, and promise the rubes the world.

Did Trade Tariffs Cause the Great Depression? | Fortune
Thank you. I am quoting from you link.

Quote:
Smoot-Hawley, Reynolds points out, passed the House in May 1929, and stocks were battered every time the act moved through the legislative process. On Oct. 23 of that year, a Wednesday, it became clear the tariffs would be much broader than first believed.

The very next day, of course, was Black Thursday. Markets dropped 9% in a day and kicked off a yearslong stock meltdown.

As Reynolds sums up, “market participants do not wait for a major law to pass” before retrenching their positions. In 1929, they were right to sell. Smoot-Hawley ultimately raised tariffs on tens of thousands of products, and trade policy analyst Bill Krist points out that by the end of 1934, global trade had tanked by 66% from 1929 levels.
I am blown away by the apparent stupidity. I don't mean for sure we should blame the Great Depression on the tariffs, but for sure the people who make tariff decisions should be talking with the people who support Wall Street and together there should be a decision on the best reasoning. That is what democracy is supposed to be about, rule by reason. That means neither a king nor a president determines what will happen. If kings or presidents make the major decisions without the consent of those affected, that is not democracy.

I think we need to take a good look at the difference between what happens and what is democracy. I think it is really stupid to impose tariffs without the consent of major investors.

Maybe for a pagan it's perfect.

You have more faith in the intelligence of the American voter than I do, but I earnestly hope you are 100% correct about the Dems taking over again.

Regarding the GOP strategy....spot on. That's the pattern they follow.

I want to talk about Trump's strategy. Humans are humans no matter where they live and how does Trump's strategy differ from Hitler's, other than Hitler scapegoated Jews and Trump is scapegoating Mexicans? Notice how he is stirring up the crowd, building their morale by dehumanizing the "enemy". This works in war and football, but it is an honorable human value, when the game is more serious than football? Is this the way humans should behave or does it look more like how primates behave?

Diving gleefully off script at a campaign event on Tuesday night in Nashville, Donald Trump picked up right where he left off earlier this month, calling members of the Salvadoran-American street gang MS-13 less than human. “They’re not human beings,” he declared. “And this is why we call the bloodthirsty MS-13 gang members exactly the name I used last week. What was the name?” he asked the crowd, which responded with a booming chant of “Animals!” This is what “rallying the base” looks like in 2018, as the midterm elections approach. Trump was in town to churn up excitement for Republican congresswoman Marsha Blackburn in the battle for Bob Corker’s newly open Senate seat against Democrat Phil Bredesen, a former Tennessee governor. It was also, in a way, a metaphor for the state of play in Washington as Republicans brace for what could be a blue wave in November.
If it were not for "those" people ruining our economy, our lives would be so much better, and as your leader, I will take care of the problem and then you will have the lives you deserve.
