Obama's Federal Pay Freeze

Kudos to the President for freezing federal pay. But, it is not enough. Federal workers are overpaid (making double their civilian counterparts according to USA Today). The article below says it all:

The number of federal workers earning $150,000 or more a year has soared tenfold in the past five years and doubled since President Obama took office, a USA TODAY analysis finds.

The fast-growing pay of federal employees has captured the attention of fiscally conservative Republicans who won control of the U.S. House of Representatives in last week's elections. Already, some lawmakers are planning to use the lame-duck session that starts Monday to challenge the president's plan to give a 1.4% across-the-board pay raise to 2.1 million federal workers.

FEDERAL WORKERS: Earning double their private counterparts

Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, who will head the panel overseeing federal pay, says he wants a pay freeze and prefers a 10% pay cut. "It's stunning when you see what's happened to federal compensation," he says. "Every metric shows we're heading in the wrong direction."

National Treasury Employees Union President Colleen Kelley counters that the proposed raise "is a modest amount and should be implemented" to help make salaries more comparable with those in the private sector. What a joke - they are greatly overpaid cf. to private workers.

Federal salaries have grown robustly in recent years, according to a USA TODAY analysis of Office of Personnel Management data. Key findings:

Government-wide raises. Top-paid staff have increased in every department and agency. The Defense Department had nine civilians earning $170,000 or more in 2005, 214 when Obama took office and 994 in June. How about intense pay cuts for the 780 Obama hires or better, fire them.

•Long-time workers thrive. The biggest pay hikes have gone to employees who have been with the government for 15 to 24 years. Since 2005, average salaries for this group climbed 25% compared with a 9% inflation rate.

•Physicians rewarded. Medical doctors at veterans hospitals, prisons and elsewhere earn an average of $179,500, up from $111,000 in 2005.

Federal workers earning $150,000 or more make up 3.9% of the workforce, up from 0.4% in 2005.

Since 2000, federal pay and benefits have increased 3% annually above inflation compared with 0.8% for private workers, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Members of Congress earn $174,000, up from $141,300 in 2000, an increase below the rate of inflation.

Jessica Klement, government affairs director at the Federal Managers Association, says the government's official pay analysis shows that federal workers earn less than private workers for comparable jobs. Still, she says, managers are willing to give up next year's raise: "If it will help the country bounce back, they're willing to make the sacrifice."

Now Obama needs to scale back those extortionate government pensions.

I wish we had a Governor in California with the cajones to do likewise.

I don't know though...only 4% of the employees are discussed in the OP. What about the other 96%. How much do they make?

While I agree the above sounds alarming, making the above "freeze their pay" argument based on that 4 percent comes across as a bit disingenuous.

A better subject would have been to "investigate that 4%" to see if there's something amiss like there was in that California town where those people were raping the govt.

Did you not read the article which notes that Federal workers make double what their private counterparts make? We need to immediately carve all federal workers back to the comparable level of their civilian counterparts.

I've have leighredf, see I don't really disagree with you but at the same time I do. I'll try to explain because Obama just really pisses me off sometimes. Even before the Obama meet with the republicans he said he's going to freeze wages on federal employees. Well first of all that plays into the republican lie (and it's a lie) that federal employees make more than people in the private sector. The truth is if you take equal numbers, if you average down to a million federal employees and a million people down at the private sector, yes the federal employees make more. So I got that.

But the reason why is because most or many people that work for the federal government do so because they got degrees in specialties. I mean you got drug inspectors, food inspectors, weather people, people working for the national atmospheric and oceanic administration, science people, NASA, and etc etc etc. Where as if you take a million people in the private sector you got greeters at Wal-Mart, people working at 711 and the guy pumping gas and stuff like that, you get my point. When you compare people of the same experienced in the public sectors, people make less money. If you get a bachelor degree, masters degree, a PHD, you'll make less money working for the federal government than you will working in private industry. What he needs to do is cut the wages of the ass holes on Wall Street.

So by freezing the wages for the federal workers what Obama has done is ratify a republican lie. One that has been going on for a long long time. Republicans has been saying this for decades. And a course their problems with federal employee by in large (other than they work for the gubment) is that they're unionize. So I'm saying that Obama bought into a republican lie.

And it's economically stupid too. You're not helping the economy buy freezing wages. What Obama needs to do is try brining up the people wages that works in the private sectors closer to the federal workers.
