Ford's $5 per 8 hour day, up from about $2.34 for 9 hours and later the 40 hour week were direct ploys to keep the unions out of his factories.

They tell a nice story about how leisure time was important and that people with time on their hands tend to spend more. There may be some truth in that, but the bottom line was, he didn't want the unions.

Oh and ironically, it was the British that invented the "coffee break". Rolls Royce had an American factory, they had noticed a drop off in production in the afternoons. Not sure how, but they discovered that a short break and some caffeine raised production.
