Sales taxes are problematic in regard to those not fully subject to income taxes. But many of those people are indirectly income taxed to a great extent. Certainly, a very substantial portion of enterprise's income taxes and employers' other taxes are passed on to their customers.

FICA is our most regressive of all federal taxes. Replacing any portion of FICA payroll taxes with a general sales tax of lesser rate would increase tax revenues for Social Security and Medicare at no additional cost to USA employees, (which includes the working poor who in proportional to their incomes, benefit more from those programs).
Refer to the thread:
FICA and SECA are our most regressive taxes.

First question again: why use a sales tax to replace payroll taxes? This simple chart I found on Wikipedia explains the problem:

Individual income tax contributions trending down...mostly because of the huge cut in income taxes on higher earners since Ronnie Reagan; and corporate taxes??? Why not put them back where they were and where they should be since the stratification of incomes and wealth clearly show supply side theory is a ruse used by the rich to offload more and more costs of government on to average workers!

As for sales taxes....how many yachts do you need? We know billionaires all own homes in every city or resort they spend time in, BUT there is a simple decliining relationship on percentage spending as incomes rise! The poor have to spend almost everything they earn to buy things they need, so if you want to stimulate the economy, you put more money towards food stamps, public housing and other programs that put more discretionary income in the hands of the lowest earners/NOT the highest!

But,that is exactly what sales taxes do, and rebates for low income earners only help balance it out slightly as their tax credits don't come close to matching what they have to spend on food and consumer items....and we know this for fact in Canada, as after most provinces had a federal sales tax (GST) added on about 30 years ago by a former conservative government (surprise, surprise), poverty rates increased...and as expected, those of us in the middle can't get within a gunshot of earning any sales tax credits when we file income tax at the end of the year!

It's all a ruse played on us by the rich who feel they are so valuable they shit gold and shouldn't have to pay any taxes to support the systems they control!

Right to Left, other than your opposition to a sales tax, I don't know what problem you're explaining?
You don't question why I propose FICA and SECA payroll taxes should be equally reduced for both employers and employees? Your only concern is the proposal that the employer's taxes should also be reduced?

Within the thread “ FICA and SECA are our most regressive taxes. ”, is post #2, which is a too wordy response to your question.

Your claims that sales taxes aren't regressive are my only interest in the topic!

And some people have more discretionary income than others, therefore sales taxes, as with ALL flat taxes are regressive!

UNLESS you exempt necessities food, (from the grocery store, not any type of restaurant prepared) clothing, shoes, (everyday wear not designer labels) and medicine, lower income people pay a much higher percentage of their incomes in taxes. Sales taxes without exemption are highly regressive.
Thanks from RNG
