More High School Grads Decide College Isn’t Worth It

By Ben Casselman

As the U.S. economy improves, more high school graduates are choosing work over college.

Just under 66 percent of the class of 2013 was enrolled in college last fall, the lowest share of new graduates since 2006 and the third decline in the past four years, according to data released Tuesday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Among all 16- to 24-year-olds, school enrollment experienced its biggest decline in at least two decades. The report echoes other recent evidence that college enrollment has begun to ebb after surging during the recession. ...

Well.... All it is is a piece of paper...
Honestly, they should hire for work ethic, drive, ability to learn.

On the job training would be so much better than a diploma.

The expense of college is becoming more prohibitive. How sad for a once great nation.

Did you take out student loans for your accounting degree, and subsequent CPA certification?

A lot of people are choosing trades over college,\

Borrow 100,000 to go to college to get a 100K/year job , and lose 5 years of wealth development, end up paying 200K by the time you pay off the debt (debt is slavery)

or Spend 7K paying cash learn pipe fitting go to ND and get a job in the oil industry making 200K by age 20...

Put 50K/year investment for 5 years... (that 250K will grow to become 20+ million in 30 years) having 30,000,000 in liquid assets at age 55, think you could get by on that?

depends on the job. when a graduate starts work, there is a degree of on the job training anyway. it builds on the basics they learned when getting their degree. for a lot of things you need a high level of knowledge before starting on the job training.

the fact that you have got a college degree is some evidence that you have a level of drive, work ethic and ability to learn. at least it used to be, and it should be still.

a mere bachelor's degree has meant nothing for 20 years now, other than as entre into some state or fed job requiring same. A master's degree can mean nothing, too, if it's not in a growing field, like med care.

We lament losing our manufacturing base, and then we lament high school grads deciding college isn't worth it.

That is pretty schizoid, if you ask me.

The nation model of all chiefs - if you're a citizen - and no Indians has driven the "need" for illegal immigrants. It's a failed model.
