Teachers don't "get" 2.5 months "off" in the summer. They are put out of work. They are seasonal workers. They DO NOT GET PAID for the summer months. Which is why most teachers - especially young ones with families - have summer jobs or teach summer school. Could your family survive easily with 1/6 of your year's income taken away?

Get so sick of people talking about teachers' pay ... it's CRAP ... and it is one of the few crap paying jobs that requires (in most states) graduate degrees and continuing education (expenses!).

$56k is now considered a great job income??? WHERE??? Certainly not here in CT. And not in NY state - I loved my high school school teaching job - but I had to quit and get a job at a university where the pay was better.
Oh, that is the nation wide average. Here is New York average pay. $81,640.00. Now lets talk about the continuing education shit. A teacher has a bachelors. They are teaching fill in the blank. They go and get a master degree. They get a 15% pay raise for getting the higher degree. They still teach fill in the blank and nothing changed. Why? Why should a teacher get paid more, because they got a higher degree but their job never changed, their responsibility never changed nothing changed. Yet, we give them a pay raise because they made a choice to get a higher degree.

Just gonna toss this out there. If you look in the dictionary under Southern, Conservative, Baptist, and Retired, you'll find a picture of my 86 year old mother. She is a retired school teacher. She taught for 25 years in public school. She's been collecting her retirement pension from the state and her social security for more than 20 years now. Sometimes I have to bite my tongue and laugh to myself when she goes off about how socialists and that damned Obama, are killing the country. Especially considering she got a pretty big pay bump from SS after my father died, even though they hadn't been married for more than 30 years !!!!

Did she pay into those systems? I suspect she did. But, you do dance around a critical point. The working class is being taxed to death to fund the non working class. Generation X will be the first generation that will not get back the same amount of benefits that they have paid in. Thanks baby boomers. I agree that SS is Socialism. For starters I am not allowed to opt out of it. If I try people with guns come and take me to jail.

It is NOT a choice. It is REQUIRED OF THEM.

If a teacher with a bachelors doesn't get a graduate degree within five years, the teacher no longer has a position.

At least, that's the way it is in PA, NY and CT. I believe most states are the same way as the states with which I'm familiar - maybe a few are different.

Actually you can opt out of SS. You have to me Amish, Mennonite or a pastor. When you opt out though, you opt out of ALL SS benefits. Which means no SS, no medicare/medicaid, no benefits for you or your children if you become disabled or die while they're still young.

Teachers earn a nine month salary.

Now, in most states, they have the OPTION of having that figure divided up and paid over a period of 12 months. That is what I did because I have a small private income that helped boost my monthly take.

However, if you take your full monthly pay monthly, you do NOT get paid for the summer months when school is not in session.

Does that explain it to you?

Why do you think so many teachers work at second jobs in the summer? - because if anybody could use a break from stress and overwork, believe me, it's teachers.

I think anyone can opt out of SS. WE have to apply to GET it, soooo IF you don't apply, you don't get the payouts. I have talked to several seniors who are well into their 70s and they haven't applied for their SS because they don't need the money and they are still working.
