Georgia School Ranks 26th in the Nation

People like to talk trash about southern schools. I love to see an example where a school just a couple miles from where I type this message proves that there are school here in the south that are excellent. They ranked 26th in the country out of 2300. That is impressive. More impressive? Over 35% are on free lunch. This isn't a rich kid private school but rather a public magnet school.

The Gwinnett School of Math, Science and Technology should make room for more hardware.

The Lawrenceville charter school remained on top of a ranking by The Washington Post’s list of “most challenging” high schools across the country. GSMST was named the top school in Georgia on the list, 19th in the South and 26th in the country out of 2,300 schools.

Last year, GSMST was ranked No. 1 in Georgia and No. 17 in the country.

The list, compiled by staff writer Jay Mathews, is measured by a “challenge index” that considers the number of students who enroll in Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Advanced International Certificate of Education courses.

Warner, K. (2016, April 19). GSMST again tops Georgia schools in national rankings.- Gwinnett Daily Post

I lived in rural Houston County, Ga. for five years and urban Clayton County, Ga. for twenty years. I fit in pretty good being a damned yankee and after a scuffle was told that Georgia does not consider Ohio a yankee state. I loved Georgia and have Georgia on my Mind.

It's a small world. I am in Clayton County, often. I am also from Ohio. It is indeed a small world. While I live in Walton County, I have an apartment in McDonough (Henry County).

It is a small world, indeed. I met a man overseas who was married to my neighbor. I knew my neighbor but did not know the man I met overseas.

edit: I have no doubt that you know where the Southern Comfort is located where live Country Music is played, great food and George S. Jones owned the joint and was lead singer in the band but not related to the famous George Jones. Semi-truckers were more than welcome and there was a giant semi-truck gravel parking lot around his place. I was not a trucker and only an industrial electrician working in Atlanta.

As a former teacher, I'm always delighted to hear about outstanding schools and educators. We are in Arizona and I wish I could say that our public schools are thriving. Unfortunately that's not the case. Most of our schools are struggling. Educators are leaving the profession in droves. The majority of our AZ children have no hope of competing in the global job market. It's quite sad.

When a position cannot be defended it is called untenable. I welcome teachers to the war.

Georgia has had its battles but overall schools are improving. There are only two union school districts in the state. That has been part of the problem. The Atlanta Public Schools with their cheating scandal and Clayton County losing its accreditation. First district in a decade to have that happen.

Georgia is a 'Right to Work' State.
