Tristan, there are several things in play here. First of all, non-educators are making decisions for educators--politicians, state school boards, bureaucratic paper pushers, PhDs researchers, etc.
Secondly, we've got a cycle of the "Let's Try This" quick-fix crowds.....jumping in and out of the newest fads.
Third, parents are no-shows....no shows at home, at school, or in their kids' lives. AND if they do SHOW UP they've got something to bitch about. "Why don't you like my Susie Q?" "Susie says you don't like her." "Susie would never lie."
"Susie didn't mean to throw that tuba at John."
AND lastly but most important, teaching has been taken OUT OF THE hands of the teachers. Teachers are told what to teach, when to teach it, how to teach it, and how to test it....and test it.....and test it. We give pre-tests, post-tests, district tests, state tests, and achievement tests. We start preparing for the tests the first day of school and once those state tests are proctored we might as well close the doors for summer. Did you know that primary school children have limited recess now? YEP. Recess is fluff. YEP. Field trips--NOPE. They are also fluff. Art? Fluff. Music? Fluff. We're talking about 6-7 year olds....because the new "FAD" is: GET RID OF THE FLUFF and work those kids' butts off. Test scores MATTER. There will be NO coloring or playing--nope. LIft that barge and tote that bale....and as you said, IT'S NOT WORKING.

To fix public Education in the USA:

1. Close every school building with more than 500 students.

2. Fire every administrator above building principal.

3. Parents get to choose the school their child attends and the tax dollars follow the student.

4. Teachers must be in charge and responsible for the curriculum they teach.

Addition:

5. Shut down the federal department of education.

Where is the money going to come from to build all the new schools that will be required to accommodate all the overflow students? One example: The high school I attended senior year (the only year I went to a public school), the enrollment is approximatedly 3,400. My graduating class had 1,013 in it. You're talking about needing 3 MORE high schools in that one school district alone. That's a LOT of money you're spending there.

2. Fire every administrator above building principal.

You mean don't have a school superintendent? So the schools within one district wouldn't have anybody coordinating their budges, services, schedules, etc? My gods, what a chaotic mess *that* would be.

3. Parents get to choose the school their child attends and the tax dollars follow the student.

What happens when more than 500 parents want their children to attend one specific school? Who gets to have their wishes granted and who gets to be second best? Sounds like a recipe for war to me.

4. Teachers must be in charge and responsible for the curriculum they teach.
Whew. No thanks. I've known too many holy roller Bible thumper teachers in my day to have them be in charge of what they teach.

I understand why you've said each of the statements you've made ... but I think they would create WAAAAAAY more problems than they would solve.
Thanks from RNG and Clara007

If you don't like what the teacher does you go to a different teacher. If a teacher can't draw enough students for a class they have to find a new line of work.

If a teacher draws too large a class, either first come first served or a lottery for open seats.

Teach me Common Core.

48
X 25
------

Now, this is how I learned to do it by hand...

48
X 25
------
48 X 5= 240
48 X 2= 96

240+96=336

Now, several years ago, some math guy was selling easier math books online and he was saying that you should do it this way, let's make 48 into 488....

488
X 25
-------
488 X 20 = 9760
488 X 5 = 2440

9760+2440=12,200

To me it was sort of a hinky method, but cut down on carrying a number to the next row of numbers, but it was all the same math.

So, how does "common core" do it, and if it is really stupid and complicated, why doesnt the parents, the math teachers and the administration complain and just refuse to do it? Math for most people is already as interesting as watching paint dry, why make it more boring and complicated?

Actually you aren't far off, Boogie. The premise of Common Core math is not the "HOW" but the "WHY". Example, many of us learned to add whole numbers by using the so-called standard algorithm: lining numbers up vertically and adding each column, carrying when necessary. This traditional method is still required by Common Core. But how many of today’s parents understand why it works? If you learned this way, it’s likely that the “how” of doing the calculation has been drilled into your head, but the “why” has been lost. Common Core math teaches students how to take the numbers apart and put them back together with a solution. See example:

My elementary school had PTO and not PTA. Parent Teacher's Organization is teacher friendly and Parent Teacher's Association parent friendly.

So, you propose they not only choose the school they prefer, but the teachers as well?! Exactly how do you propose this scheduling be facilitated?

If a teacher draws too large a class, either first come first served or a lottery for open seats.
So, the two teachers who are the most qualified to teacher honors English have their classed filled with eager under-achieveing students. The over-achieving honors students just ... lose?!

Your educational utopia doesn't really make any kind of sense in reality, It is impossible to work logistically.
