As an ex-high school teacher and ex-college professor, I am anti-common core advocate. It's absurdity goes beyond all comprehension - and I believe is a high factor in the dwindling rate of achievement of American students. No country with high statistics for academic scores use common core as a teaching method.

I saw on the web some time ago that 2+2=5 and started to read the proof but quickly lost interest. New math, ugh.

we lived in the suburbs for a bit when my kids were little. a supposed "fantastic" school district. i had to relearn basic math to help them w/ their homework. both of my kids hated school then. we moved back to the city and enrolled them in montessori style school. they not only began to enjoy school but excel.

Sabcat, this topic’s title, “Kids react to 2 + 2 = 5 (common core)” infers that the common-core curriculums are leading children astray.

Within the linked video, two ladies that I would suppose were teachers and possibly still are teachers were explain a method for teaching elementary arithmetic with the additional aim of introducing them to some of mathematic’s underlying logic.

One of the ladies was saying students were required to explain or demonstrate the logic by which they arrived at their answers; even if those answers were incorrect.
The second lady said that they would of course correct the student if their answers were incorrect.
I perceive this as a method to teach students that the logic by which they arrive at their answers are as important and possibly more important than the answer itself.
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

I’ve seen too many examples of people failing to solve problems because they couldn’t logically confront them. Math majors can solve many formulas that would be beyond my capabilities. But some of them have too little understanding of the logic described by those formulas.

Even among those with Math degrees who have practiced to deal with logical formulas may be inadequately educated. Such graduated Math majors too often cannot deal with real problems that are not similar to those they encountered in their text books. They lack the knowledge, imagination and appreciation of the underlying logic of the formulas they practiced on.
Thus they are at a loss when they must create a formula that specifically describes the real new problems they’re asked to solve.

Computers can do the arithmetic but their abilities to solve problems is limited to the abilities of those that create the logical computer circuits and the logical formulas to be used, and the selection of data processed through those formulas.

Two plus two does equal five but only under one special circumstance using new math. I learned math by rote with the teacher using flash cards. Two plus two always equals four.

When the libs solve Pi, then and only then will I listen to them. Pi can never be solved even using a million monkeys figuring for billions of years.

edit: twenty-two divided by seven is close

I’m more dismayed rather than amused when participants introduce positions within the political spectrum into a discussion where the political spectrum has no relevance.

Those unable to express logical opposition to the positions of others are unable to conceal their handicap when their responses are illogical; particularly when their illogical responses effects (other than denigrating themselves) also undermine the supposed purposes of the discussions.

I don’t believe all respondents post only to cast illogical insults upon others.

Respectfully, Supposn.
