Change in teacher's salaries

Clara has often made a claim that teacher's salaries are eroding. Well, here's some data on it.

If you go to the link, the graph is in fact interactive, as you put the cursor on each arrow you get hard numbers.

Teachers in Oklahoma haven't seen salary increases since 2008. Oklahoma legislators raised taxes on Wednesday night for the first time in 28 years to give teachers $447 million for raises. However, teachers say that isn't good enough.

Sounds like they should have quit some time ago.

IMO if you go on strike you have forfeited your job and should be replaced.

Thank you, R. I would like to add some things. First, this is not just about salaries--although it is way overdue. Second, this is also about the students and I really can't believe parents are absolutely outraged. Parents should be marching for their kids.

Public schools are dealing with:
+Crumbling textbooks and not enough textbooks
+Broken desks or kids sitting on tables/floor
+Old buildings/mold/broken boilers/no A/C
+Larger class sizes
+Increased LD/ED and autistic kids
=Sluggish internet connections
+Lack of volunteers and aides
+Not enough supplies: copy paper, pencils, kleenex, markers, whiteboards, ink cartridges and hand sanitizer
Thanks from imaginethat and Camelot

@Clara

Of course, it is really about the children--the kids come first.

I thought that teachers pay was decided by each school district.

You know that "principle" that a high-paid medical profession is a good idea because good salaries attach the best talent?

Funny how the people who defend high-priced medicine don't apply this principle to the teaching profession, but then all they do is teach our children, nothing very important..........

Carry on....
Thanks from Clara007

Well, to be honest, those who can not do teach. There is a whole lot of truth to that. Also, lets look at the typical high school teacher work schedule. I can not think of any high school that does not give at least one hour out of the work day for the teacher to prep or grade. Every holiday off. Christmas vacation, spring breaks. Summer break. Lets compare that to other professions

Well, to be honest I've met many highly motivated teachers who could be earning as much or more in business and industry who teach, and are damned good at it, because they like teaching and like working with young people.

Strangely, they see our youth as the future of this country.

Are some teachers slackers? Yep, like every other profession or trade.

Sure there is slackers, but ironically tenure is demanded.
