Electric cars an eco bust!

Not so eco friendly after all.

All-electric cars: Not so eco-friendly
Thanks from Tony

Vegetarians of America will be sadly disappointed. And, what about gay spotted whales?

I'm shocked (no pun intended), simply shocked. Perhaps if the climate alarmists clicked their heels together it would work out better? Ya think.

What is a "gay spotted whale" and why would vegetarians be particularly saddened by this report???
I mean yeah, whales are pretty smart, but I don't think they can read English.

OK, so don't buy an electric car if you live in North Dakota or West Virginia...
But it still makes sense in California, New York or even Florida....

For a 2012 Nissan Leaf, its average rated efficiency of 99 MPGe translates to 34 kilowatt-hours per 100 miles. Just multiply that by your electric cost. So if you pay the U.S. average of 12 cents/kWh, the Leaf will cost you $4.08 to go 100 miles (versus $16 in a 25-mpg car with gas at $4/gallon)
Electric-Car Efficiency: Forget MPGe, It Should Be Miles/kWh

That means 2.15#/kwh X 34 = 73.1# of carbon as CO2 from an electric car.
How much carbon dioxide is produced per kilowatthour when generating electricity with fossil fuels? - FAQ - U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA)

With a gas car getting 25mpg, 100 miles = 4 gallons of gasoline.
19.6 #carbon/gallon X 4 gallons = 78.4
How much carbon dioxide is produced by burning gasoline and diesel fuel? - FAQ - U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA)

So pretty close. Slightly better for the e-car.

But convert the coal to natural gas and the e-car becomes

1.22#/kwh X 34 kwh = 41.4 # of carbon so the earth wins.

I think the title of this article is quite misleading since it isn't the electric cars themselves that emit, for example, CO2 but, rather, the potential source of the electricity that charges them that might emit CO2.

Indeed, the article even admits that if the source of the electricity for said cars is from solar energy, for example, they are indirectly far more eco-friendly than if the source if that electricity is from coal.

And rather than being shocked, I'm not surprised at all that certain individuals here would present this article or comment on this article the way they have here...of course without even recognizing their own form of...for a lack of better word...goofiness concerning this observation.
Thanks from imaginethat and catus felis

Typical fright wing headline. Make a huge FAIL announcement then utterly fail to back it up in the article.

Did you read the article ? It clearly states that this ONLY applies to coal fired plants. EVERYTHING else, including natural gas is cleaner than gasoline.
Thanks from catus felis

If you live in New York City or LA you shouldn't even own a car; the illegal Mexicans should be made to drive folks around in rickshaws as in China. Notice how bad the air quality has gotten in China's large cities like Peking (I know about the name change, I'm just stubborn) since they all but eliminated the rickshaws in favor of cars.
